Koh Tao for digital nomads

Sairee

Sairee is the west coast strip most people picture when they think of Koh Tao: a long beach, sunset bars, dive schools and dorm beds at 7 to 15 USD a night, according to Traveltomtom's August 2026 area guide. The beachfront bars run late, so if you want to sleep and take a 07:00 dive boat, look north toward the Jitsin side or up in the hills behind the village. Everything you need on foot is here: minimarts, laundries, cafes, the flat road to Mae Haad.

Mae Haad

Mae Haad is the working village. The Lomprayah and Songserm piers, Bangkok Bank and Krungsri, Koh Tao Hospital, the post office and TaoHub, the coworking space near the pier, sit within a short walk of each other, with Blacktip a few minutes inland on the Tanote Bay road, per the Koh Tao Complete Guide services page. It is less pretty than Sairee and more practical, and rents for furnished apartments start around 250 USD a month with houses at 500 to 1,200 USD, according to Holafly's May 2026 long stay roundup.

Chalok Baan Kao

The south bay is the calm option. Dive schools, a handful of restaurants, the municipality office and Rescue Koh Tao are here, and evenings are quiet. It is about ten minutes by scooter to Mae Haad, so you will want wheels. Rooms tend to be cheaper than Sairee for the same standard.

Tanote, Hin Wong and the east coast

The east coast bays face away from the prevailing wind, so they stay sheltered and clear when the west coast is rough, as Isla Tortuga Divers describes month by month. The price is isolation: Tanote has one rough access road, few restaurants (so food costs more), limited accommodation and a taxi boat recommended for luggage, per Jonny Melon's area guide. Choose it for sunrise, silence and snorkelling from your doorstep, not for a coworking routine.

Our rule of thumb

Rent between Sairee and Mae Haad if you want to live without a scooter. Rent in Chalok if you want quiet and are happy riding. Rent on the east coast only for a stay where the sea matters more than the wifi.

The price bands

Sources published in 2026 agree on the shape of the market even when the exact figures differ. Sairee Cottage Diving puts the cheapest private rooms and wooden bungalows at about 4,000 THB a month. Digital Nomads World lists budget rooms at 6,000 to 10,000 THB, standard apartments at 15,000 to 18,000 THB and beachside places or villas from 20,000 THB. Isla Tortuga Divers' 2026 cost guide gives a 12,000 to 30,000 THB range for monthly rentals. Nomads.com shows a one bedroom studio at 826 USD (September 2026), which is the short term, foreigner facing end of the market rather than what a resident pays.

Only about 37 percent of buildings have air conditioning according to the same nomads.com page, and April peaks around 34 C, so decide early whether you need AC and budget the electricity it burns.

What is and is not included

Wifi and water are usually included. Electricity is almost always billed per unit at a landlord rate that sits above the utility tariff, so ask for the per unit price before you agree to anything. Ask too whether the building has a generator and a water tank: outages and dry season shortages are real, and a tank is the difference between a shower and a bucket in April.

Deposits

Common practice is one month deposit plus the first month, paid in cash. No source publishes a fixed rule, so treat it as a negotiation and get a written receipt with the date, the amount and the landlord's name. Your landlord is also legally required to file a TM30 notification within 24 hours of your arrival, per Thai Law Online, and some immigration offices ask for the receipt at 90 day filings, so ask for a copy.

How to find a room

1. Book the first week on Airbnb or a guesthouse, especially in the December to February and July to August peaks.
2. Join the Facebook groups Koh Tao Rooms for rent, Koh Tao Bungalows and Rooms, and Koh Tao house for rent, and post what you want with your budget and dates.
3. Rent a scooter and ride the back roads behind Sairee and Chalok. Handwritten "room for rent" signs are still how most places advertise.
4. Check dive school notice boards: divers leaving the island pass rooms on with the landlord's number.
5. Test the wifi with a speed test at the time of day you work, and ask to see the electricity meter.

Three budgets

The low budget figure of 15,000 to 20,000 THB comes from Digital Nomads World. The household bands (single 1,400 to 2,500 USD, couple 2,200 to 3,700 USD, family of four 2,800 to 4,800 USD) are from Nomad Mum's September 2026 update. Meal and daily spend ranges (Thai meals 50 to 100 THB, Western 250 to 500 THB, budget days at 1,000 to 1,800 THB, mid range from 2,500 THB) come from Isla Tortuga Divers.

Why the island costs more than the mainland

There is no large supermarket, only 7-Elevens and minimarts, and everything is shipped from Chumphon or Surat Thani. Fuel is around 40 to 50 THB a litre depending on the shop. Card payments often carry a 3 to 4 percent surcharge, so you will run on cash, per the Koh Tao Complete Guide. Nomads.com puts Koh Tao at 2,320 USD a month for a nomad against 2,298 USD for Koh Phangan, 1,655 USD for Bangkok and 1,433 USD for Chiang Mai (read on 26 September 2026). Those numbers reflect short term foreigner pricing; a local rental and Thai food cut them roughly in half.

Diving is the line item that changes everything

A PADI Open Water course costs 12,000 THB at Siam Scuba, gear and boat included, per its 2026 price guide read on 26 September 2026; other schools price around that, and what an Open Water course costs on Koh Tao compares them. A Divemaster internship runs 59,500 to 89,500 THB at Isla Tortuga. If diving is why you are here, budget it separately from living costs.

Seasonal swings

December is the most expensive month and October the cheapest. In the monsoon, which peaks from late October into December, Wonderland Koh Tao reports accommodation drops of 50 to 60 percent against peak. Arriving in late September and negotiating a three month rate is the cheapest way to live here.

Blacktip Cafe and Workspace

Blacktip is where most remote workers on the island end up. The official site lists 14 seats, two phone booths and one private office, internet up to 1,000 Mbps down and 500 Mbps up on WiFi 7, dual fibre with automatic 5G failover, battery backed network gear and a generator for the whole office. Hours are 09:00 to midnight seven days, with sign ups closing at 21:00. Pass prices on Blacktip's own page are 250 THB a day, 200 THB after 17:00, 1,250 THB a week and 3,500 THB a month, with the week and the month including the sauna and the ice bath. The Nomadwise directory listing still shows 300 a day and 1,500 a week, which is out of date; the two agree on 3,500 a month. The cafe at the front does proper coffee and food, so a day pass is also a lunch plan.

TaoHub

TaoHub is closer to the pier, air conditioned and open around the clock, which matters if you keep US hours. Digital Nomads World lists it at about 500 THB a day and 5,000 THB a month; another directory quotes 400 THB a day and 1,500 a week, so confirm at the desk. Both spaces run generators, which on Koh Tao is the main reason to pay for a desk at all.

Cafes with wifi you can actually use

Nomad Photographer's cafe test, updated 28 December 2025, measured these download and upload speeds:

Most cafes close at 16:00 or 17:00, so they cover a European morning but not a European afternoon. Bring a laptop with a full battery: sockets are rarer than the wifi.

The honest verdict

Two coworking spaces and half a dozen cafes is enough for one to three months, not for a permanent base. Koh Phangan has five coworking spaces at 2,000 to 5,900 THB a month and a bigger community if infrastructure is the priority. Koh Tao wins on the dive boat leaving at 07:00 and you being back at your desk by noon.

Home fibre

AIS (merged with 3BB as AIS 3BB Fibre3 in 2023) and True both sell fibre on Koh Tao. Mainland packages of 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps run about 590 to 1,200 THB a month, and the installation fee is typically 4,800 THB when not waived, per The Thaiger's provider guide. You need a landlord's ID and a contract, so a fresh install only makes sense for a stay of six months or more. For shorter stays, rent a place that already has fibre and run a speed test at the hour you work before you pay a month.

Mobile

AIS is the usual recommendation for coverage on the island; True (which absorbed dtac) works well in Sairee and Mae Haad. Both fade in the east coast bays. Buy the SIM at a 7-Eleven or the AIS shop in Mae Haad with your passport, and treat 5G tethering as your backup line rather than your main one.

Power cuts

This is the real constraint. Blacktip states plainly on its Koh Tao page that outages have become more frequent as the island grows, and that coworking spaces run backup generators so they are mostly unaffected. Outages range from a few minutes to a few hours, and storms in November and December make them worse. Practical playbook:

1. Keep a power bank that can charge a laptop, and a small UPS on the router if you rent for more than a month (about 1,500 THB in Mae Haad).
2. Tether to AIS 5G the moment the wifi drops. The mobile towers have their own backup.
3. Know your nearest generator: Blacktip, TaoHub, Hype Coffee (closes 17:00, closed Tuesdays) and Factory Cafe, per Nomad Photographer.
4. Warn clients in advance that you are on an island, and keep meetings that matter inside coworking hours.

What speed to expect

Nomads.com reports an average measured speed of 18 Mbps for Koh Tao against 71 Mbps for Koh Phangan and 32 Mbps for Bangkok. Measured cafe speeds range from 17 to 147 Mbps. The number that matters is upload for video calls, and the fibre lines at the coworking spaces deliver that; a 12,000 THB studio with a shared router usually does not.

Scooters

Wonderland Koh Tao's July 2026 rental guide lists 200 to 300 THB a day for a 125cc automatic, fuel around 40 THB a litre, and a cash deposit of 3,000 to 5,000 THB or a passport copy. Never leave the passport itself: Island Travel in Mae Haad accepts a copy plus 2,000 THB, and others will too if you ask. Film the bike, including the underside, before you ride off, because damaged parts must be replaced new at the shop's price.

The legal side is the part people skip. The UK FCDO states that helmets are mandatory and riders need a licence valid for that vehicle type or a 1968 International Driving Permit, and that riding without proper licensing can invalidate travel insurance. A car licence does not cover a scooter. Roads are steep concrete with sand on the corners and unlit stretches; the Tanote and Mango Bay roads are the hard ones. Learn on the flat Sairee to Mae Haad road first. Traffic accidents, not crime, are the number one risk on the island.

Taxis and taxi boats

Pickup taxis charge per person at fixed island prices and may charge double for a solo passenger who wants to leave immediately, per the Koh Tao Complete Guide. Moto taxis run about 100 to 1,000 THB by distance according to Digital Nomads World. Longtail taxi boats wait along Sairee and Mae Haad beaches and quote a return fare for Tanote, Hin Wong or Nang Yuan; there is no published tariff, so agree the price before boarding.

Living without a scooter

Possible if you stay between Sairee and Mae Haad, about a ten minute walk apart with a flat road. Anywhere else, no.

Ferries

All ferries use Mae Haad. Lomprayah's catamaran to Chumphon takes about 1 h 45 with three sailings a day (first 05:45, last 13:15) at about 750 THB, per Ferryhopper. To Samui it is about 1.5 h on the catamaran for 700 THB, with a taxi plus ferry combo at 850 THB, per Siam Tickets. Koh Phangan is about an hour away from 14 USD on Bookaway. Bangkok Airways flies Bangkok to Samui roughly every 30 minutes from 06:00 to 22:00, and the Lomprayah bus and boat from Bangkok takes about 8 h 45 from about 47 USD; our post on the cheapest and fastest route to Koh Tao compares every option. A 20 THB island fee is collected at the pier for everyone aged 12 and up.

What exists

Nomad Mum's 2026 comparison of the two islands is the most recent survey we found of family infrastructure here, and it counts two kindergartens or international schools on Koh Tao against around 15 international schools and kindergartens on Koh Phangan. We have not been able to verify current fees, curricula or enrolment for the two Koh Tao schools from an official or published source, so we do not name them here; ask in the Koh Tao parents' Facebook groups and visit in person before committing. The same source notes some ballet and dance classes during the week, and that locals love children and families are welcomed everywhere.

What it costs

Nomad Mum's September 2026 cost of living page budgets childcare or education at 5,000 to 25,000 THB a month, a couple at 2,200 to 3,700 USD and a family of four at 2,800 to 4,800 USD a month. Nomads.com gives a family figure of 3,338 USD (September 2026). A house with a kitchen and two bedrooms is the main line: expect 20,000 to 40,000 THB a month depending on area and season.

The practical limits

The transport problem is the one families underestimate. There are very few cars on the island, so most families ride scooters with children on board, and if you are not confident doing that, the island shrinks to the Sairee to Mae Haad walk. There is no large supermarket, and the government hospital in Mae Haad handles outpatient care and dental but transfers serious cases to Samui by boat (see the healthcare section below). Tap water is not drinkable; refill stations and 20 litre bottles are standard.

Who it suits

Families on a one to three month stay with a homeschooling routine, a parent who rides comfortably, and children old enough to snorkel and love it. Koh Phangan, an hour away by ferry, is the easier choice for a school year: more schools, more cars, more space, and the same sea. On the island

Koh Tao Hospital (government, Mae Haad, 077 456 490) handles general medicine, dental, lab work, X-ray, prenatal care and diving medicals, with outpatient hours 08:00 to 16:00 daily and a 24 hour emergency service, per the Koh Tao Complete Guide.

Ocean Medical Clinic (Mae Haad, opposite Krungsri Bank, 077 423 801) is the English speaking private option, open daily with a dive emergency line around the clock. Thai Inter Medical Clinic (077 332 511) has a physician on standby at all hours, and Koh Tao Physician on Sairee is reported open 24 hours, per Baanlyy's 2026 healthcare page. Private clinic visits cost about 700 to 1,500 THB.

The chamber

Koh Tao has had a multiplace recompression chamber at Mae Haad since 2023, run by the SSS Chamber Network with a 24/7 emergency line on +66 81 081 9777. A session costs 15,000 to 40,000 THB and up, which is why dive insurance (DAN or equivalent) is not optional if you dive regularly. The Koh Tao Tourism Association advises waiting 24 hours after diving before flying.

The boat to Samui

Anything beyond clinic level goes to Koh Samui. The transfer takes one to two hours by speedboat or ferry and costs an estimated 2,000 to 8,000 THB. Bangkok Hospital Samui in Bophut has a 24 hour ER, a Hydrolance boat ambulance serving Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, and direct billing with Allianz, Cigna, AIA, April, Pacific Cross, BUPA, Aetna and William Russell. Phone +66 77 429 500. Thai International (Bandon) and Samui International are the alternatives.

Insurance

The everyday risk here is the scooter, and insurers only pay for a crash if you held a licence valid for the vehicle, per the UK FCDO. Read the motorbike and diving clauses before you buy, and check that evacuation to Samui and direct billing at Bangkok Hospital Samui are covered. The shape of it

Nomad Mum gives the numbers that explain the atmosphere: 21 km2, about 8,000 residents, about 400,000 visitors a year, against Koh Phangan's 125 km2, 13,000 residents and over a million visitors. On nomads.com Koh Tao has 352 reviews and a score of 3.28 out of 5 (rank 296), while Koh Phangan has 830 reviews and 3.65 (rank 111), read on 26 September 2026, per the nomads.com city pages. The gap is infrastructure and crowd size, not friendliness.

Where remote workers meet

Blacktip is the de facto clubhouse. Its Koh Tao page says most nomads work from there because it is the biggest coworking space on the island, calls the community small but welcoming, and lists a Nomad Lunch Meetup every Thursday at rotating restaurants. It also warns, fairly, that people without projects or routines might find the island too small. TaoHub draws the night owls on US hours.

Where everyone else meets

Dive schools are the social engine. A course puts you in a group for three or four days, a Divemaster internship for six to eight weeks, and the bars along Sairee fill with the same faces every evening. If you are not diving, freediving schools, Muay Thai, yoga classes and the sunset at Sairee do the same job. Chalok Baan Kao has a quieter version of all of this.

Online

The Facebook groups are the island's notice board: Koh Tao Rooms for rent, Koh Tao Bungalows and Rooms, Koh Tao house for rent, and the general Koh Tao groups where people post bikes for sale, lost items and ferry questions. Search "Koh Tao" plus "digital nomads" on Facebook for the current group rather than trusting a name in a blog post; they change.

Calendar

Songkran (13 to 15 April) closes the island for three wet days. The Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan, an hour away by boat with 5,000 to 30,000 attendees according to Wikipedia, empties Sairee once a month. Monsoon in November thins everyone out and some dive shops pause, and the people who stay through it tend to be the ones who are still here next year.

Honest expectations

Stay one to three months and you will know the island. Stay a year and you will know the fifty people who also stayed a year. That is either the point or the problem, depending on what you came for.

Koh Nang Yuan

Three islets joined by a sandbar, a viewpoint and some of the easiest snorkelling in the Gulf. The Koh Tao Tourism Association says the longtail from Koh Tao takes five to ten minutes, drivers quote a return fare, the island opens 10:00 to 17:00, and visitors carrying single use plastic such as water bottles are asked to leave it at reception. On the entry fee the sources disagree: the tourism association page lists 100 THB, while the Koh Tao Complete Guide lists 250 THB per person and a 17:00 closing time. Bring 250 THB in cash per person and you are covered either way. A regular boat also runs from the Lomprayah pier in Mae Haad. Go before 10:30 or after 15:00 to miss the snorkel tour crowds.

Koh Phangan

About one hour on the Lomprayah catamaran from 14 USD, per Bookaway, with several sailings a day. Worth a day or a week: Sri Thanu for the yoga and coworking scene, Thong Sala for the night market, and the Full Moon Party at Haad Rin if that is your thing (the UK FCDO flags assault risk there; go in a group and lock your room). Many remote workers here alternate months between the two islands.

Koh Samui

Lomprayah runs from Mae Haad to Maenam pier in about 1 hour 45 minutes for 600 to 750 THB, or 550 THB on the slower Laemsor ferry, per Siam Tickets. For most residents Samui is not a day trip but an errand: Koh Samui immigration for anything the island office on the Mae Haad to Chalok Baan Kao road cannot do, which is everything beyond the 1,900 THB 30 day extension, 90-day reports and re-entry permits, Bangkok Hospital Samui for anything the clinics cannot handle, and the big supermarkets. Combine the errand with a night in Bophut and the 850 THB taxi plus ferry combo.

Ang Thong Marine Park

The 42 island archipelago west of Samui is a national park, and foreign adults pay 300 THB entry (children 150 THB), a rate set on 30 September 2022 according to Thailand Elite Visas' summary of the fee change. Tour boats mostly depart from Samui and Koh Phangan, so from Koh Tao it is a long day or an overnight. Check whether the park fee is included in the tour price; it often is not.

Around Koh Tao itself

A longtail round island snorkel trip stops at Mango Bay, Hin Wong, Aow Leuk and Shark Bay and costs a few hundred baht per person on a shared boat, negotiated on the beach. In the November to December monsoon the west coast can see waves up to 4 m, per the Koh Tao Complete Guide weather page, and the sheltered east coast bays become the only calm water. Ferries rarely cancel but crossings get rough, so build a buffer day before any flight.
