This Koh Tao monthly budget example puts one person at about 25,000 THB a month on a low budget in 2026, and about 55,000 THB for a comfortable month with air conditioning, a coworking pass and some diving. That is roughly USD 755 and USD 1,643 at the September 2026 rate. Both figures come from the table below, built from island price guides, a coworking price list and two crowd sourced cost sites, all checked in September 2026. How much does it cost to live on Koh Tao per month?

One person needs 25,000 to 55,000 THB a month on Koh Tao, before insurance, flights and visas. The two columns below are scenarios, not a household ledger. The low column takes the bottom of each published range and assumes you cook most meals, rent away from Sairee and use coworking a couple of days a week. The comfortable column takes the top of each range, adds a full coworking month and four fun dives.

At the XE mid market rate of 26 September 2026 (33.41 THB to the US dollar, 38.07 THB to the euro), the low month is about USD 755 or EUR 663, and the comfortable month about USD 1,643 or EUR 1,442.

BAANLYY, an island property and relocation guide dated 7 July 2026, lands in the same place from a different direction. It bands a solo diver or nomad at 30,000 to 50,000 THB a month, a comfortable expat at 55,000 to 95,000 THB and villa life at 130,000 THB and up. Its bands run higher than ours because they include the lines we left out on purpose.

Is Koh Tao expensive?

Koh Tao is cheap to live on and expensive to visit. The gap shows in the two most quoted sources. Nomads.com puts a nomad month on Koh Tao at USD 2,319 in September 2026, about 77,500 THB, and a one bedroom studio in the centre at USD 825, about 27,600 THB. BAANLYY lists Sairee Beach studios at 9,000 to 15,000 THB a month.

Neither number is wrong. Nomads.com leans on what a short stay visitor pays: its own page shows a median hotel month at USD 1,413 and a median Airbnb month at USD 3,190. Someone who stays three months and signs a monthly lease with a landlord on the island pays the BAANLYY price.

Daily prices are low once you are there. Numbeo, updated on 8 January 2026 from 13 entries by 2 contributors, lists a meal in an inexpensive restaurant at 115 THB and a cappuccino at 95 THB. BAANLYY puts a local Thai meal at 50 to 90 THB and a large beer at a beach bar at 100 to 200 THB. Imported food is where the island gets expensive: everything arrives by boat.

How much is rent on Koh Tao per month?

A studio on Koh Tao rents for 5,000 to 15,000 THB a month, and the area decides most of the price. BAANLYY's 2026 rental market page breaks it down:

1. Quiet east and south coves: studios 5,000 to 8,500 THB, one bedroom 7,000 to 12,000 THB.
2. Mae Haad and Chalok: studios 8,000 to 13,000 THB, one bedroom 10,000 to 16,000 THB.
3. Sairee Beach: studios 9,000 to 15,000 THB, one bedroom 12,000 to 22,000 THB.

Numbeo's contributors report 15,000 THB for a one bedroom flat in the centre and 12,000 THB outside it. High season, from December to April, pushes rents up 15 to 30 percent, and BAANLYY notes that a written 6 to 12 month lease locks in the lower rate. Budget two to three months of rent to move in: one or two months of refundable deposit plus one month in advance.

Why is the electricity bill so high?

Electricity costs more than the national tariff because most landlords resell it. The Energy Regulatory Commission set an average tariff of 3.86 THB a unit for September to December 2026, including an Ft charge of 0.1623 THB and before VAT, according to CapSolar's summary of the ERC resolution of 5 August 2026. BAANLYY puts the real PEA residential rate on the island at roughly 4 to 5 THB a unit, and landlord rates at 7 to 10 THB.

Take 300 units in a month as an example: that is 2,400 THB at 8 THB a unit against about 1,200 THB at 4 THB. BAANLYY's monthly bands follow the same logic: 600 to 1,200 THB for a fan only room, 1,800 to 3,500 THB for an air conditioned studio or one bedroom. The rate is negotiable before you sign and fixed after. Ask for the per unit price in writing and photograph the meter on move in day.

What does one month on Koh Tao cost for remote work?

Working remotely adds 2,000 to 4,700 THB a month to the base budget. Blacktip Coworking lists a day pass at 250 THB, a week at 1,250 THB and a month at 3,500 THB, with the sauna and ice bath included in the week and month. Nomads.com puts the average hot desk at USD 142 a month, about 4,700 THB.

What does a monthly budget on Koh Tao leave out?

The table covers living costs only. Five lines belong in your plan but not in a monthly average:

1. Health insurance, and dive cover if you dive. Nomad plans are priced per person and per age.
2. Flights in and out, spread over the whole stay.
3. Visa fees and the Samui trip for an extension. Inside Samui lists a Koh Tao to Samui catamaran at 450 to 600 THB each way, matching Seatran Discovery, not the Lomprayah catamaran, which runs 600 to 750 THB.
4. The move in deposit, two to three months of rent held by the landlord.
5. Anything that breaks: a dentist, a laptop charger, a scooter repair.

How can you cut the monthly cost?

Rent and electricity are the two lines where one conversation moves the number for months. A longer lease outside Sairee, agreed before high season, and a landlord rate of 7 THB a unit instead of 10 THB save more than skipping coffee or diving. Cash is the other quiet cost: major Thai bank ATMs charge about 220 THB per foreign card withdrawal and AEON machines about 150 THB, according to the Chiang Rai Times in September 2026.
