Koh Tao is worth visiting if you want to learn to dive, spend time in clear water, or work from a small island with fibre at a coworking desk; it is a harder sell for a long stay if you do not dive, travel with school age children, or need to work US hours. What is Koh Tao known for?

Koh Tao is known for scuba diving. Wikipedia describes diving as extremely popular there because of clear visibility, low prices, warm water and the range of sea life. The Koh Tao Complete Guide adds that more schools on the island offer SSI courses than anywhere else, which is why so many people arrive for an Open Water course and stay longer than planned.

Beyond diving, the island offers freediving, snorkelling from the beach, hiking to viewpoints, Muay Thai and yoga. It is small: 21 square kilometres, so you can see most of it in a week.

Is Koh Tao safe?

Koh Tao is safe for most visitors, and the risk that actually hurts people is the road. The Traveltomtom safety guide calls traffic accidents, especially on rented scooters, the biggest risk on the island, pointing to steep hills, sand on the corners and inexperienced riders. It describes serious violent crime involving tourists as rare, and opportunistic theft of phones, cash and bags as the more common problem.

Crowd data is less kind. Nomads.com rates overall safety on Koh Tao as bad, with reviews mentioning local crime. Treat that as a signal to lock your room and watch your phone, not as a measured crime rate.

Many people also ask about 2014. On 15 September 2014, two British tourists, Hannah Witheridge and David Miller, were murdered on Sairee Beach. Two Burmese migrant workers were convicted in December 2015 and sentenced to death; their sentences were commuted to life imprisonment in August 2020. Is Koh Tao good for non divers?

Koh Tao works for non divers for a holiday or a month, and less well for a long stay. Snorkelling, freediving, hiking and beaches fill a few weeks easily. The island's own coworking space, Blacktip, writes on its site that people without projects or routines might feel the island is too small. That is a fair warning from a business that wants your membership.

How much does it cost to live on Koh Tao?

Koh Tao costs about USD 2,319 a month for a nomad, according to Nomads.com crowd data read on 25 September 2026. That figure assumes eating out and booking short stays online. Rent is the main lever: Blacktip lists long term housing from 8,000 to 30,000 THB a month, with a decent studio at around 15,000 THB.

Is the wifi on Koh Tao good enough for remote work?

The wifi is good enough on a fibre line, and unreliable on shared guesthouse wifi. Blacktip advertises fibre at up to 1,000 Mbps down and 500 Mbps up. Nomads.com puts the island average at 18 Mbps, a figure built from user tests that mostly come from guesthouses and cafes. Both are true: they measure different connections.

Is Koh Tao good for kids?

Kids do well on Koh Tao for a month or a season, but a school year is hard to organise. Nomad Mum counts two international schools and kindergartens on Koh Tao against around fifteen on Koh Phangan. BAANLYY, a schools directory, states that Koh Tao has no Ministry of Education licensed international school at any age, and lists four options families use:

1. Relocate to Koh Samui, one to two hours away, where international schools operate.
2. Homeschool or follow an accredited distance curriculum.
3. Enrol at the Thai medium government school, which accepts non Thai residents.
4. Board older children in Phuket or Bangkok.

How long can you stay on Koh Tao?

Most visitors arriving from 15 September 2026 get 30 days visa exempt, plus one 30 day extension. The Royal Thai Embassy in London confirms the 30 day stay, the extension, and a limit of two visa exempt entries per calendar year. Immigration may also ask for proof of onward travel within 30 days and 20,000 THB per person in funds. The extension fee is 1,900 THB, according to the fee list of the Trat Immigration Office. Island Travel Koh Tao reports that the Koh Tao immigration office, between Mae Haad and Chalok, handles tourist extensions on form TM.7, so you do not need to go to Samui for that.

Can you work US hours from Koh Tao?

Working US Eastern hours from Koh Tao means working through the night. Thailand is on UTC+7 all year and never uses daylight saving time. US Eastern is UTC minus 5 in winter and UTC minus 4 from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November. So Koh Tao is 12 hours ahead of New York in winter and 11 hours ahead in summer, and a 09:00 to 17:00 New York day runs from 20:00 or 21:00 to 04:00 or 05:00 on the island.

What should you ask yourself before booking?

The useful question is what you will do on a rainy weekday once the novelty has gone. If you dive, train, or bring a real project, Koh Tao holds up for months. If you do not, plan three or four weeks, and the island will likely be one of the best parts of your trip.
