How many days do you need on Koh Tao?

By DigiTao editorial.

Koh Tao is small, so the number of days depends less on the island than on whether you dive and how you leave.

How long to stay, by type of trip

TripDaysWhy
No diving3 to 4The Koh Tao Complete Guide says most of the island can be walked and explored in that time
Open Water courseat least 4 nightsBig Blue Diving teaches it over two and a half days, advises four nights on the island and a 24 hour wait before any flight
Remote workone to two monthsA visa exempt entry gives up to 30 days, plus one extension of up to 30 days

Add a buffer day from October to December, when a rough sea can delay the boat out. Our answer on ferries in the monsoon explains why.

What to do on Koh Tao besides diving

  1. Snorkel from the beach. Big Blue Diving names Tanote Bay, Aow Leuk and Shark Bay, all within a 20 minute drive of the pier.
  2. Take a longtail to Koh Nang Yuan, the small islands joined by a white sandbar. Boats from Sairee cost 100 to 150 THB each way and take about 15 minutes, per The World Travel Guy, which lists a 250 THB entry fee for adults in 2026, paid in cash. Inside Samui quotes about 100 THB, so carry both. Plastic bottles are not allowed on the island, and the last boats return at 17:00.
  3. Walk up to John-Suwan viewpoint at the southern cape: 50 THB and about 20 minutes on foot from the car park, per The Backpacking Family.
  4. Hike to Two View, the high point reachable from Tanote Bay in under an hour, or the 90 minute Laem Thian trek from Sairee.
  5. Book a Thai cooking class, about 1,500 THB a person for three or four dishes.
  6. Spend an evening on Sairee Beach, where the bars Big Blue Diving lists are.

A four day outline without a dive course

Day one for Sairee Beach, day two for Koh Nang Yuan, day three for snorkelling at Tanote Bay and Aow Leuk, day four for John-Suwan viewpoint and Shark Bay.

Pick your month with the seasonal check for Koh Tao, check your allowed stay with Visa Check, and read our Koh Tao page for where to sleep. Course prices are in how much a PADI Open Water course costs on Koh Tao.
