What a Koh Tao Power Cut Costs a Remote Worker, and the Backup That Fixes It

A Koh Tao power cut usually costs a remote worker a dropped call, not money, plus up to an hour of lost work, and a backup setup that covers most cuts costs about 6,000 THB once plus 300 to 600 THB a month for mobile data. Residents report that cuts are frequent and mostly short. The island's coworking spaces and a few cafes run generators. Below is what public sources say about the outages, what each piece of backup costs at Thai retailers today, and where to work when the village goes dark. How often does the power go out on Koh Tao?

Nobody publishes an official outage count for Koh Tao, so the honest answer is: often enough to plan for, usually for less than an hour. The Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) supplies the island, runs a fault line on 1129 and posts outage notices, but it does not publish a per island reliability log we could find.

What exists instead are reports from people who live and work there:

1. Blacktip, a coworking space in Mae Haad, writes that Koh Tao "can experience both announced and spontaneous power outages", and that a 2025 connection to the power plant on Koh Phangan improved things without ending cuts.
2. Justyn Jen's Koh Tao digital nomad guide says outages "have become more frequent as Koh Tao has gotten busier" and that they "usually last under an hour".
3. BAANLYY's utilities guide says brief outages during storms are more common than on the mainland, and that Sairee, Chalok Baan Kao and the east coast bays can wait longer for power to return than Mae Haad.
4. Wonderland Koh Tao mentions occasional cuts in high season.
5. Koh Tao FYI, a local news page, announced a planned island wide PEA outage for 29 May 2025, so some cuts are scheduled maintenance you can see coming.

Sources also disagree on where the power comes from. BAANLYY describes an undersea cable. Wonderland Koh Tao describes diesel generators topped up by about 30 percent from Koh Phangan and Samui. Blacktip's note about the 2025 Koh Phangan link sits between the two. For a remote worker the source matters less than the pattern: short cuts, more of them in storms, and a few planned ones.

What does a power cut cost a remote worker?

The direct cost is small; the real cost is a call that drops without warning. A laptop keeps running on its own battery. The router, the fibre box and the fan do not. Without a backup, you lose your connection at the moment the lights go out, and a client sees you vanish mid sentence.

Which UPS works for a router in Thailand?

A small line interactive UPS from a Thai computer retailer is enough for a router and fibre terminal. JIB lists the APC Easy UPS BV500I-MST (500 VA, 300 W) at 1,860 THB and the BV800I-MST (800 VA, 480 W) at 2,430 THB. Both are sized for a desktop computer, and a router plus a fibre box draws a small fraction of that, so the battery lasts far longer than the rated runtime for a full PC load.

Plug in only the router and the fibre terminal. A laptop charger on the same UPS drains it fast and you do not need it, since the laptop has a battery. Smaller 12 V mini UPS units made for routers are also sold on Lazada; check that the output voltage matches the label on your router's power adapter before you buy.

A UPS will not help if the outage also takes down the fibre cabinet up the road. That is why the second layer is mobile data.

Does mobile data work during a power cut on Koh Tao?

Mobile data often keeps working, but not always, so treat it as a second layer rather than a guarantee. BAANLYY reports that AIS has the widest coverage on the island, that data packages run about 300 to 600 THB a month, and that since May 2026 foreigners register SIMs in person with a passport, capped at three per operator. Justyn Jen warns that outages "frequently cause our phone data and internet to stop working", because cell sites need power too.

A laptop power bank closes the remaining gap. It keeps the laptop going if a cut runs past your battery, and it charges your phone for tethering. Check the USB-C output: a laptop usually needs 45 W or more, and JIB lists both the Xiaomi 212W HyperCharge 24,500 mAh at 4,199 THB and the Anker Prime 20K 220W at 5,099 THB.

Where can you work during an outage on Koh Tao?

The safest place to work during an outage is a coworking space with its own generator. The options named in public sources:

1. Blacktip, Mae Haad: a backup generator for the whole office including air conditioning, battery powered network gear, two fibre lines and 5G failover. Open 09:00 to midnight, sign up before 21:00.
2. TaoHub: open 24 hours a day all year, according to Digital Nomads World. It does not publish whether it has a generator, so ask before you rely on it.
3. Hype Coffee: one of the few places with its own generator, according to Nomad Photographer, but it closes at 17:00 and shuts on Tuesdays.
4. Factory Cafe: has a generator, according to Justyn Jen, and stays open until 21:00, according to Nomad Photographer.

What should you tell clients before storm season?

Tell them before anything goes wrong, and give them a rule they can act on. Storms bring the most cuts, and the wettest stretch on the island runs from late October to December. A short note sent in October reads as planning, not as an excuse. We suggest it covers four points:

1. Where you are: a small island in the Gulf of Thailand, through the monsoon from late October to December.
2. What can happen: a power cut may drop you from a call without warning.
3. The rule: give you five minutes to rejoin from mobile data or a coworking space, and expect a message either way.
4. The fallback: after ten minutes of silence, the call carries on without you, and no deadline on your side depends on the grid.

The last point only works if you keep it: during the monsoon, finish anything important a day early.
