Community guidelines

How we keep DigiTao friendly and useful: the rules for comments, member posts and profiles, how we moderate, and how to appeal.

Last updated .

The short version

DigiTao is a place to help each other live and work well abroad. Share what you know, ask what you don't, and treat people the way you'd want a stranger to treat you in a new town. These rules apply to comments, stories, photos, profiles, private messages and anything else members post.

Be kind and respectful

Disagree with ideas, not with people. No insults, name calling or mocking someone for their English, their budget or their choices. Assume good faith: most people here are figuring it out, like you.

No harassment or bullying

Don't target anyone, follow them from thread to thread, or pile on. No threats, ever. If someone asks you to stop, stop.

No hate speech

Nothing that attacks people for their nationality, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability or age. That includes jokes and coded language.

No sexual content

No sexual content or sexual comments about anyone. Anything involving minors is reported to the authorities.

No spam or self promotion

Share a link when it helps the conversation, two per comment at most, and none in your first 24 hours as a member. No ads, referral codes, affiliate links or repeated posts.

No scams or fraud

No fake visa services, investment schemes, requests for money or anything that tricks people. If an offer sounds too good to be true, report it.

Nothing illegal

Nothing that breaks the law in the European Union or in the country it concerns, such as selling drugs, forged documents or ways to overstay a visa.

Respect privacy

Don't share anyone's personal details (address, phone number, private photos or messages) without their clear permission. That includes your landlord and your ex.

Be yourself

One account per person. Don't pretend to be someone else, a brand or the DigiTao team.

Private messages

Private messages follow the same rules as everything else on DigiTao. You can start a conversation once your account is 24 hours old, and reply to a member who writes to you at any time. The first time you write to someone, the conversation lands in their Requests folder, and you can send three messages at most until they reply. Links follow the rule for comments: none in your first 24 hours, two per message at most. If a message bothers you, ignore the request, block the member or report the message. A report attaches the 20 most recent messages of the conversation, ending with the one you report, so Etienne and Linda can see what happened. It is the only way they ever read a conversation.

Stories and photos

Share your own story or your own photos: what you lived, what you learned, the places you saw for yourself. Everything else on this page applies too, with three rules of their own.

  1. Your own words and your own photos only. No text copied from elsewhere, no photos you did not take.
  2. No advertising, no referral codes and no affiliate links. Links follow the rule for comments: none in your first 24 hours, and ten per post at most.
  3. People who are recognisable in your photos have agreed to appear in them.

Etienne and Linda read every post before it goes live and aim to answer within 72 hours. If we don't publish it, we tell you the rule concerned and our reason, and you can change it and submit it again. If you think we got it wrong, see If you disagree with a decision. A published post can still be reported, like any comment.

How we moderate

Anyone can report a comment, a member post or a profile with the Report button, or from our report page without an account, and members can report a private message they received. Etienne and Linda read every report and aim to decide within 24 hours. A word filter and a links rule check comments, member posts and private messages before they appear, and three member reports hide a comment or a member post until a person reviews it. No AI judges what you write, and every decision about an account is taken by a person.

What happens when a rule is broken

  1. We hide or remove the content and tell you which rule it broke.
  2. If it happens again, we pause your account for 7 days: you can still read, but not post.
  3. After that, a 30 day pause.
  4. Then we close the account.

Threats, hate speech, sexual content involving minors, scams and doxxing can lead straight to a closed account, and we report illegal content to the authorities.

If you disagree with a decision

Every decision comes by email with the rule concerned and our reasons. Reply to that email and tell us why you think we got it wrong. A person who did not take the first decision reviews it when possible, and we answer within 7 days.
