Diving and Remote Work on Koh Tao, Hour by Hour

Diving and remote work on Koh Tao fit together best when you take the morning dive boat, which leaves around 07:00 and is back by 11:30, then work from early afternoon into the evening, when European clients are at their desks. The afternoon boat is the one that clashes with a European working day. Everything below comes from the dive schools' own timetables, the official clock change dates and the published hours of a coworking space, checked on 25 September 2026.

When do Koh Tao dive boats leave and come back?

Most Koh Tao dive boats run a morning trip from about 07:00 to 11:30 and an afternoon trip from about 12:00 to 17:00, with two dives on each. The published timetables of three schools, checked on 25 September 2026:

Two dives a trip is the standard format. IDC Koh Tao notes that combining all three trips allows five dives in a day, which is a holiday schedule, not a working one. Crystal Dive caps groups at four divers per guide and runs from its own pier, which helps when you want to be off the boat and on a scooter quickly.

The return time on the timetable is the boat touching the pier. Rinsing gear, logging dives and getting home to shower takes longer than newcomers expect, so plan on being at a desk around 13:00 at the earliest after a 07:00 boat.

How many hours ahead of Europe is Koh Tao?

Koh Tao is five to seven hours ahead of Europe, depending on the country and the season. Thailand runs on Indochina Time, UTC+7, all year and has never observed daylight saving time. Europe moves its clocks twice a year: summer time starts on the last Sunday of March and ends on the last Sunday of October, which in 2026 means 29 March and 25 October. The UK government lists the same dates for British clocks.

In practice, a Central European 09:00 to 18:00 day lands between 14:00 and 23:00 on Koh Tao in summer, and between 15:00 and midnight in winter. A London or Lisbon day starts one hour later still. The gap widens by an hour at the end of October without anything changing on the island, so recurring calls set in European time slide one hour later on your side each winter.

What does a dive and work day on Koh Tao look like?

A workable dive day puts the dives before lunch and the calls after it. This is the schedule the timetables and the time gap allow for someone with Central European clients in summer:

1. 06:30: light breakfast, gear bag packed the night before.
2. 07:00 to 11:30: morning boat, two dives.
3. 11:30 to 12:30: rinse gear, log dives, get home.
4. 12:30 to 14:00: a proper meal and the low effort tasks: invoices, inbox, planning.
5. 14:00 to 18:00: focused work and calls while Europe has its morning.
6. 18:00 to 19:00: dinner break.
7. 19:00 to 22:00: second work block, the last useful window before European offices close.

Keep the hardest thinking away from the hour right after the second dive. The Koh Tao Tourism Association says most call outs for diver sickness come down to dehydration, and tells divers to drink plenty of water and not to dive when sick, congested or hungover. A late call followed by an early boat stacks tiredness onto a physical activity, so a night that ends at 23:00 is a good reason to skip the next morning's boat.

Can you take calls from the dive boat?

Do not plan calls from the boat. The BAANLYY guide to Koh Tao internet, updated 2 July 2026, says AIS signal reaches popular sites such as Chumphon Pinnacle, Southwest Pinnacle and the HTMS Sattakut wreck, but it is patchy on the boat itself depending on distance and weather, and True and dtac fade faster on the remote eastern routes. A message may go through on a surface interval; a video call will not be reliable. Where can you work in the afternoon and evening?

A coworking space open late is the simplest answer, because European hours run into the night on Koh Tao. Blacktip Coworking Space, off the main road towards Tanote Bay, publishes these terms on its own site, checked on 25 September 2026:

1. Hours: coworking 09:00 to midnight, seven days a week, with sign ups before 21:00.
2. Prices: 250 THB a day, 200 THB for a day pass after 17:00, 1,250 THB a week and 3,500 THB a month.
3. Setup: 14 coworking seats, 2 standing desks and 2 soundproof phone booths.
4. Resilience: dual fibre with automatic 5G failover and a backup generator for the whole office.

The after 17:00 price suits a dive day well: dive in the morning, work from home through the quiet early afternoon, then take a desk for the European evening. With only two phone booths, book one before your first call rather than hoping one is free.

How do you plan two weeks of diving and remote work on Koh Tao?

Plan dive mornings on fixed days and protect the rest for work. A two week pattern that respects the timetables and the safety rules:

1. Days 1 and 2: settle in, test your connection at the desk you will use, and book dives only after that.
2. Days 3 to 12: dive two mornings a week on fixed days, for example Tuesday and Friday, and keep the other weekdays free of boats.
3. Days 3 to 5, if you are not certified: Siam Scuba lists its PADI Open Water course at 12,000 THB over two and a half days in its 2026 price guide, so book it on light work days.
4. Day 13: last dive, no later than 24 hours before your flight.
5. Day 14: travel day.

The 24 hour gap between the last dive and a flight comes from the Koh Tao Tourism Association. Most routes off the island combine a ferry with a flight from Samui, Surat Thani or Chumphon, so count back from the flight, not the ferry.
