Cost of living on Koh Tao in 2026: three real monthly budgets

Koh Tao has one cost you negotiate once (rent), one you choose every week (diving), and a long tail of small lines that barely move. Fix those two and the month writes itself.

The dive student budget, 15,000 to 20,000 THB. Digital Nomads World puts a low budget island life at 15,000 to 20,000 THB a month, or USD 470 to 625, which is what a fan room, Thai kitchens and a rented scooter actually cost. It is a real budget, not a stunt, but it means no air conditioning, no coworking desk, and eating from the same few shops near your bungalow.

The comfortable remote worker budget, 35,000 to 60,000 THB. This band is our own arithmetic rather than a published figure, so here is the sum: a studio at 12,000 to 18,000 THB, a scooter at 3,000 to 6,000 THB a month (Nomad Mum), a Blacktip month pass at 3,500 THB (Blacktip's price list), a mix of Thai meals at 50 to 100 THB and Western meals at 250 to 500 THB (Isla Tortuga Divers), electricity at 1,800 to 3,500 THB for an air conditioned studio and fun dives at 1,000 to 1,500 THB each (BAANLYY). It sits inside Nomad Mum's single person band of USD 1,400 to 2,500 and up.

The couple and family budget. Nomad Mum, updated on 8 September 2026, gives USD 2,200 to 3,700 and up for a couple and USD 2,800 to 4,800 and up for a family of four, with childcare from USD 150 to 440 a month for a nanny to USD 440 to 730 for the international school. Nomads.com lands close on families at USD 3,338. The second adult adds food, sometimes a second bike and a second desk, but not a second rent, which is why a couple never costs twice a single.

Why we do not convert for you. Our sources publish in baht or in dollars, so every figure keeps the currency it was published in. Run today's rate through Currency Check, then set Thailand against another country in Country Comparison.

What a real month looks like. Take the middle of every band: a 14,000 THB studio, a 4,000 THB scooter, a 3,500 THB Blacktip pass, food at roughly 12,000 THB, four fun dives at 1,250 THB and electricity at 2,650 THB. That is about 41,000 THB, before a ferry to Samui and before the month you decide to do your Advanced course. Rent on Koh Tao is quoted by the month, paid in cash, and it is the one line where the published sources agree on the shape even when the exact figures differ. Nobody signs from abroad, and the rent and housing section of our Koh Tao page walks through how the market actually works.

The bands. Sairee Cottage Diving puts the cheapest private rooms and wooden bungalows at about 4,000 THB a month. Digital Nomads World lists budget rooms at 6,000 to 10,000 THB, standard apartments at 15,000 to 18,000 THB and beachside places or villas from 20,000 THB, with a one bedroom in the centre at about USD 371. Isla Tortuga Divers gives a 12,000 to 30,000 THB range for long term rentals in 2026, and prices a private air conditioned room at 700 to 2,000 THB a night, which is the number to beat when you negotiate a month.

The foreigner facing end. Nomads.com shows a one bedroom studio at USD 826. That is a short stay, furnished, ready to book price rather than what somebody who arrived in October and asked around pays, and the gap between those two numbers is most of what this guide is about.

Air conditioning changes the sum twice. Nomads.com reports air conditioning in about 37 percent of buildings on the island. A unit raises the rent and then raises the electricity bill, because most landlords bill electricity per unit on top of the rent. BAANLYY bands the monthly bill at 600 to 1,200 THB for a fan only room and 1,800 to 3,500 THB for an air conditioned studio or one bedroom. Ask for the price per unit before you agree to anything, and photograph the meter on the day you move in.

What moves the price. Season moves it more than area, which the seasonal section below covers. Length moves it next: a landlord offered three months up front prices differently from one filling a room for four weeks. And a kitchen is rarer and dearer than a Westerner expects, because most island rooms assume you eat out.

There is no large supermarket on Koh Tao. Shopping means 7-Eleven, a handful of minimarts and the fresh stalls, and everything on those shelves arrived by boat, which is the single reason island groceries cost more than mainland ones. BAANLYY calls it the steepest import premium of the Gulf islands and puts groceries for a couple at 12,000 to 20,000 THB a month.

Meals. Isla Tortuga Divers prices Thai meals at 50 to 100 THB and Western meals at 250 to 500 THB and up in its 2026 cost guide. The same source puts a budget day at 1,000 to 1,800 THB all in and a mid range day from 2,500 THB. Three Thai meals a day for a month is roughly 4,500 to 9,000 THB. Swap one of them for a Western dinner every day and you add 7,500 to 15,000 THB to the month without changing anything else about your life, which makes it the biggest discretionary line on this island after diving.

Groceries. Cooking helps only if your room has a kitchen, and most do not. Where there is a two ring hob, rice, eggs, vegetables and fruit from the minimarts and stalls are cheap, while imported cheese, cereal, wine and anything labelled for tourists are not. The honest rule on a small island is that you save money by eating Thai, not by cooking Western.

Coffee. Nomads.com puts a coffee at about USD 2 and a dinner at about USD 4. The cafes people actually work from, with their measured wifi speeds, are in the coworking and cafes section of our Koh Tao page, and a cafe habit quietly replaces a coworking pass in a budget.

Water. Tap water is not for drinking. Refill stations and 20 litre bottles are how the island does it, and no source we checked publishes the refill price, so carry a bottle and ask at the shop nearest your room rather than trusting a number from a blog.

Paying. Cards often carry a 3 to 4 percent surcharge on Koh Tao, and the Mae Haad bank branches keep short hours with 24 hour machines at every 7-Eleven, per the Koh Tao Complete Guide. Food money here is cash money, so budget for withdrawals rather than only for food.

Koh Tao runs on scooters, and the transport line in your budget is really a rental line plus a small fuel line plus the ferries you did not plan for.

Scooter. Digital Nomads World lists 200 to 350 THB a day for a motorbike and fuel at about 50 THB a litre. Nomad Mum prices a monthly rental at 3,000 to 6,000 THB, which is where anyone staying a month should land. Two things belong in the budget beside the rent: a refundable cash deposit, and the repair bill you pay at the shop's price if you drop it. Taxis. There is no ride hailing on the island. Pickup taxis and moto taxis charge island prices by distance, which Digital Nomads World puts at 100 to 1,000 THB a hop. A late night ride across the island is not a rounding error, which is why people who go out in Sairee tend to live within walking distance of it.

Walking. If you rent between Sairee and Mae Haad you can live without a bike, and that is worth 3,000 to 6,000 THB a month. Anywhere else on the island, budget the scooter.

Ferry hops. Leaving the island happens more often than people plan for: a longer visa extension, a hospital appointment, a friend's flight. The island immigration office handles the 30 day extension and the 90 day report, but one year and DTV extensions still mean a day on Koh Samui, as our Koh Tao visa extension guide explains. Inside Samui lists a Koh Tao to Samui catamaran at 450 to 600 THB each way, about two hours, a fare that matches Seatran Discovery, not the Lomprayah catamaran, which runs 600 to 750 THB for about 1 hour 45 minutes. The bus and ferry from Surat Thani airport runs 1,000 to 1,200 THB per Siam Tickets, plus a 20 THB island fee collected on arrival from everyone aged 12 and over, which no ferry ticket includes. How many hops to budget. Two or three in a three month stay is realistic. Put them in the spreadsheet before they happen, because each one costs a fare, a taxi and a working day.

Coworking is the one work cost that is fixed, published and easy to plan. Everything else about working from Koh Tao is a reliability problem rather than a money problem.

The two spaces. Blacktip's own price list sets a day pass at 250 THB (200 THB after 17:00), a week at 1,250 THB and a month at 3,500 THB, with the week and the month including the sauna, the ice bath and 10 percent off at its restaurant. Digital Nomads World lists TaoHub at about 500 THB a day and 5,000 THB a month, with 24/7 access and air conditioning; confirm at the desk, because directory prices for it vary. Nomads.com puts a hot desk on the island at USD 142 a month.

Which one costs less in practice. A day pass at 250 THB is cheaper than a month pass only if you use the desk fourteen days or fewer. Anyone working full time lands on the month pass by the third week, which makes 3,500 THB the realistic line in a remote worker budget. If you keep United States hours, TaoHub's round the clock access is the reason to pay 5,000 THB instead.

Cafes instead. Free, until it is not. Many island cafes close in the late afternoon, which covers a European morning and not a European afternoon, and a day of coffees is not much cheaper than a day pass. Power backup. This is the line nobody budgets and everybody needs. A small UPS keeps the router alive through a short cut, which is usually the difference between finishing a call and apologising for one. Fibre and SIM. Home fibre only pays back over a long stay, and the speeds you are sold and the speeds you get are two different numbers, which our Koh Tao internet check sets side by side.

Diving is why most people come to Koh Tao and why island budgets look strange next to Chiang Mai ones. Keep it as its own line, because it is the only cost here that can double a month.

Open Water in 2026. BAANLYY puts a PADI Open Water certification on the island at 9,000 to 12,000 THB, and Siam Scuba's price guide lists its own at 12,000 THB over two and a half days, with gear, boat and certification fee included. Six schools' own price pages ran from 9,900 to 12,950 THB in September 2026, as our Open Water price comparison shows. The spread is real, and it is worth calling two or three schools rather than booking the first price you see, because what changes is usually group size, accommodation and whether the certification fee sits inside the number.

Advanced and fun dives. Siam Scuba lists its Advanced course at 11,000 THB over a day and a half. BAANLYY puts a single fun dive at 1,000 to 1,500 THB and a ten dive package at 7,000 to 9,500 THB. Two fun dives a week for a month is 8,000 to 12,000 THB at single dive prices, which is more than a fan room costs. Plan the number of dives before you plan the room.

Going professional. Siam Scuba prices its Divemaster at 38,500 THB over four to eight weeks, then does the honest sum itself: add six weeks of rent at 15,000 to 25,000 THB a month and food at 8,000 to 15,000 THB, and the pathway costs 80,000 to 120,000 THB over six to eight weeks. Isla Tortuga Divers prices its Divemaster internship at 59,500 to 89,500 THB depending on your current rating, a PADI IDC from about 41,900 THB and an instructor internship at 160,000 to 190,000 THB. The difference between a course fee and a real budget is weeks of living while you are not earning.

The honest framing. If diving is why you are on Koh Tao, add the dive line to the comfortable budget and accept a month of 50,000 to 70,000 THB. If diving is a holiday habit rather than a reason, one course and a handful of fun dives is a one off, and the island is cheaper than its reputation suggests.

The same room has two prices on Koh Tao, and the gap between them is larger than any other decision in this guide.

The low. Wonderland Koh Tao's low season guide puts low season from May to November, with October and November the wettest months. Accommodation drops 50 to 60 percent against peak, and in October to roughly a third of Christmas prices. The same source describes ferry cancellations as rare, two or three across several years, and puts visibility at 20 to 30 metres in the dry months against 5 to 20 metres in the monsoon.

The peak. Wonderland's month by month guide names October the quietest and cheapest month, and puts the annual price peak from late December through February, with Christmas and New Year the hardest window to find a bed. April is the hottest month at up to about 34 C and carries Songkran from 13 to 15 April. The best diving is March to May.

What that means for a budget. A 14,000 THB studio taken in December is a different product from the same studio taken in October, and a landlord filling a room in the monsoon will negotiate on a three month commitment in a way nobody does in high season. The cheapest way to live here is to arrive in late September or October, take a long room at low season pricing, and still be in it when the December crowd arrives.

What you give up. October and November bring the heaviest rain, some dive operators slow down and visibility drops. When one side of the island is rough, the other is usually calmer. If diving is the point of the trip, March to May is the window and you pay for it. If working is the point, the monsoon months are the bargain and you buy a power backup instead of a dive package. Koh Tao looks expensive in the rankings and cheap in the street, and both are true for the same honest reason: the rankings measure a foreigner on short stay rent who eats Western, and the street measures somebody on a monthly room who eats Thai.

The numbers. On the Nomads.com city pages read on 26 September 2026, a nomad month runs USD 2,320 on Ko Tao, USD 2,298 on Ko Pha Ngan, USD 1,655 in Bangkok and USD 1,433 in Chiang Mai. The Ko Tao page breaks that into USD 1,755 for an expat and USD 3,338 for a family, with a one bedroom studio at USD 826, a median hotel month at USD 1,414 and a median Airbnb month at USD 3,192. Those last two numbers explain the headline.

Koh Tao against Koh Phangan. Twenty two dollars apart on the headline and a different island underneath. Koh Phangan has far more coworking and a larger community, while Koh Tao has the diving, a shorter ride between everything and two coworking spaces instead of a dozen. The Lomprayah stops at Koh Phangan on the way to Samui, so plenty of people alternate rather than choose, and our Thailand guide sets the islands against the mainland bases.

Koh Tao against Koh Samui. Here is the honest part: none of the sources we checked on 26 September 2026 publishes a monthly cost of living figure for Koh Samui that we would repeat, so we print none. What we can say is what Samui is for. It has the airport, the immigration office for longer extensions, the private hospitals and the big supermarkets, which is precisely why Koh Tao residents end up there several times a year. Treat Samui as a recurring line inside a Koh Tao budget rather than as an alternative to it.

Koh Tao against the mainland. Chiang Mai is a little over 60 percent of the Koh Tao figure and Bangkok sits in between, and both have infrastructure this island does not pretend to have. What Koh Tao sells is a dawn dive boat and a desk by noon. If that trade does not appeal, the mainland is cheaper and easier.

Nobody leaves Koh Tao over rent. People leave because the month cost 8,000 THB more than the spreadsheet said, and the difference was fifteen small things.

1. The island fee. 20 THB per person aged 12 and over, paid on arrival and not included in any ferry ticket, per Siam Tickets. Trivial once, annoying on your fourth crossing of the season.
2. Drinking water. The tap is not for drinking. Refill stations and 20 litre bottles are the island norm and no source we checked publishes a refill price, so we do not print one. It is small, it is daily, and it is the reason to carry a bottle rather than buy 500 ml at a time.
3. Card surcharges and ATM fees. Many shops add 3 to 4 percent on a card payment. Bangkok Bank in Mae Haad opens 09:00 to 17:00 daily and Krungsri 09:00 to 16:30 on weekdays, with 24 hour machines at every 7-Eleven, per the Koh Tao Complete Guide. Each foreign card withdrawal carries a Thai ATM fee, covered in 220 baht every time, and the wider picture is in the money guide.
4. Laundry. Charged by the kilo at shops in every village. We found no published rate for Koh Tao, so this is a line you price in your first week rather than one we invent for you.
5. Clinic visits. A scooter scrape, an ear infection after four days of diving, a cut foot on a reef. These are normal here, and the island clinics, the government hospital, the recompression chamber and the boat to Koh Samui are in the healthcare guide.
6. Leaving the island. Every longer extension, hospital appointment or airport run means a ferry, a taxi and a day. Put two or three of those in a three month budget, and see the arriving and staying legal guide for what each visa step involves.
7. Sunscreen and dive kit. Both cost more here than at home, for the same boat freight reason as the groceries. Bring the sunscreen.

The buffer. A sensible buffer here is not five percent, it is a week of everything, because a cancelled plan or a repair bill always lands on the month with no room in it.
