Koh Tao vs Koh Phangan comes down to diving against infrastructure: Koh Tao wins if diving is why you come, Koh Phangan if work, schools and choice matter more, and the monthly cost is almost identical. Koh Tao is 21 km2 with cheap dive courses and a recompression chamber. Koh Phangan is six to eight times larger, with more than four times as many coworking spaces and nearly four times the average reported internet speed. Koh Tao vs Koh Phangan for diving: which is better?

Koh Tao is better for diving, and it is not close. Wonderland Koh Tao describes it as the cheapest place in the world to certify, with hundreds of dive schools and sites such as Chumphon Pinnacle, the HTMS Sattakut wreck and South West Pinnacle. It prices an SSI Open Water at about 9,000 THB, a PADI Open Water at about 11,000 THB and fun dives from about 1,200 THB. Isla Tortuga Divers gives 9,900 to 12,000 THB for the PADI Open Water in its 2026 cost guide, and 35,000 THB and up for a Divemaster course.

Koh Phangan has diving too: the same guide says a handful of schools run trips to Sail Rock, an excellent site between the two islands. The SSS Chamber Network also runs a 24/7 multiplace recompression chamber on Koh Tao; its network lists no site on Koh Phangan.

Which island has better coworking and internet?

Koh Phangan has better coworking and faster average internet. The Digital Nomad Asia, updated 2 March 2026, lists nine Phangan spaces with published prices:

1. Hustle Club: 250 THB a day, 3,900 THB a month.
2. BeacHub: 300 THB a day, 4,500 THB a month.
3. Inner Space: 400 THB a day, 5,900 THB a month, open 24/7.
4. Remote and Digital (La Casa and The District): 300 THB a day, 3,000 THB a month.
5. Coworking Space H24: 400 THB a day, 2,000 THB a month, open 24/7.
6. Make Space, Dots Coffee and Tiki Beach: day use only.

Koh Tao has two dedicated spaces, both in Mae Haad. Blacktip, on the road to Tanote Bay, publishes up to 1,000 Mbps down and 500 Mbps up on two fibre lines with automatic 5G failover, a generator for the whole office, 14 desks and two phone booths, open 09:00 to midnight. TaoHub, at the pier, is open 24/7 at 500 THB a day or 5,000 THB a month, according to Digital Nomads World.

The average speed is the other story. nomads.com user tests put Koh Tao at 18 Mbps and Koh Phangan at 71 Mbps. Both Koh Tao numbers are true at once: a paid fibre desk and a guesthouse router shared by twenty rooms. BAANLYY (updated 7 July 2026) lists AIS Fibre, True Online and 3BB on Koh Tao at 500 to 1,000 THB a month for 300 to 1,000 Mbps on a 12 month contract, strongest around Mae Haad and Sairee. Power is the weak point on Koh Tao. BAANLYY says electricity arrives by undersea cable from the Provincial Electricity Authority and that storm outages are more common than on the mainland; Wonderland describes diesel generators topped up by power from Phangan and Samui. Either way, a desk with a generator is worth paying for.

Is Koh Tao or Koh Phangan cheaper?

Neither island is meaningfully cheaper for a remote worker: nomads.com puts a nomad month at USD 2,319 on Koh Tao and USD 2,297 on Koh Phangan, with the same USD 825 for a central one bedroom flat. Those figures reflect short stay foreigner prices, so use them to compare the two islands, not to set a budget.

For backpackers, Wonderland estimates 1,000 to 1,500 THB a day on Koh Tao and 800 to 1,200 THB on Phangan, except around the Full Moon Party, when a 300 THB Phangan dorm bed can reach 3,000 to 6,000 THB.

How much does a monthly rental cost on each island?

A simple monthly room or bungalow starts around 10,000 to 12,000 THB on both islands, and a family house costs more on Phangan. The published ranges:

How long is the ferry between Koh Tao and Koh Phangan?

The crossing takes about an hour on a high speed boat; the day around it takes longer. Lomprayah, the main operator, gives 45 to 90 minutes for its high speed routes between the islands and 90 to 120 minutes for vehicle ferries. Wonderland quotes fares from about 450 to 550 THB one way, with Lomprayah and Songserm running several departures a day. Add the pier check in and a taxi at Thong Sala.

Who should pick which island?

Choose by your mornings:

1. One to three months, diving most mornings, working European afternoons: Koh Tao.
2. A year with children of school age: Koh Phangan, which has about 15 international schools and kindergartens against 2.
3. A Divemaster or instructor course: Koh Tao, budgeted separately from living costs.
4. A coworking community, yoga and redundancy if one desk closes: Koh Phangan.
5. Undecided: a month on either, then the ferry to the other.
