Koh Tao scooter rental in 2026: prices, deposit, licence and the roads that catch people out

Renting a scooter on Koh Tao in 2026 costs 200 to 450 THB a day depending on the model, plus a cash deposit of 2,000 to 5,000 THB or a copy of your passport, and none of that decides whether a crash costs you nothing or everything. That part comes down to your licence. Thai law expects a home licence with a motorcycle category and an international driving permit that repeats it, and an insurer checks that paperwork after the accident, not the shop before it. How much does it cost to rent a scooter on Koh Tao?

Price scales with the bike, from about 200 THB a day for an older automatic to 450 THB for a new adventure bike. Island Travel, a Mae Haad rental shop, lists these 2026 daily rates:

What deposit do Koh Tao scooter shops ask for?

Expect a choice between cash or a passport copy, never your original passport. Wonderland Koh Tao's guide sets the cash deposit at 3,000 to 5,000 THB and says plainly that you should never hand over your passport itself. Island Travel offers the same choice from the other side: leave an original passport with the shop, or leave a copy plus a 2,000 THB cash deposit. A shop that will only accept the original passport and nothing else is a warning sign, not a normal policy.

Do you need a licence to rent a scooter on Koh Tao?

Yes, and the rental shop is the one part of the chain unlikely to check. RentMotorbike's Thailand licence guide is direct: a car licence does not cover a motorbike, and the small category A1, which covers scooters up to 50cc, does not cover the 110cc to 160cc scooters most shops rent. Riding without the right category risks a fine of 500 to 1,000 THB at a police checkpoint, on top of full responsibility for any damage or injury. Alongside your home licence you need an international driving permit that repeats its motorcycle category: the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office tells British travellers to carry the 1968 version together with their UK licence. Does your insurance still pay out without the right licence?

Usually not, and this is where a cheap rental turns expensive. The UK Foreign Office states that if you would not be legally licensed to ride the bike at home, your travel insurer may refuse to cover you in Thailand, and that riding without a valid licence can invalidate the policy outright. What's the best way to get around Koh Tao?

For most stays longer than a few days, a scooter is the practical answer, because the island has no Grab, no Bolt and no bus route. Pickup taxis wait at the pier and a handful of fixed points and charge per person at set island prices, and taxi boats reach the east coast bays that the road barely touches. A scooter costs less than repeat taxi rides within a week, and it is the only way to reach Tanote, Hin Wong or Mango Bay on your own schedule.

Can you get around Koh Tao without a scooter?

Only if you stay between two spots. The coastal stretch from Sairee Beach to Mae Haad is flat and walkable in about ten minutes, so someone based there can skip a bike entirely and use taxis for the rest. Why do the roads catch out inexperienced riders?

Because they are steeper and less forgiving than they look in photos. Traveltomtom's safety review of the island, updated 14 February 2026, describes steep hills, sandy corners and uneven surfaces, and names accidents on rented scooters, not crime, as the biggest day to day risk to visitors. BAANLYY's cost of living page makes the same point about the east coast specifically. Nationally the picture is worse: the World Health Organization estimates 18,218 road traffic deaths in Thailand in 2021, an average of 50 a day, with motorcyclists accounting for 83.8 percent of them. None of this is a reason to skip a scooter. It is a reason to ride the flat Sairee to Mae Haad road first, avoid the steepest hills after dark or after a drink, and always wear a helmet, which is a legal requirement, not a suggestion.

How do damage scams work, and how do you protect yourself?

The common version is a shop claiming a scratch or a broken part was already there when you booked. Wonderland Koh Tao's guide describes the fix: film a slow, complete circle of the bike before you ride off, including the underside, narrating any existing marks out loud as you go. Watch for these warning signs before you take the keys and after you return the bike.

1. A shop that will only accept your original passport, with no cash deposit option.
2. A shop with visibly poor reviews on Google Maps.
3. Vague or shifting answers when you ask what specific damage costs before you sign.
4. Pressure to settle a damage claim in cash on the spot, before you can review your video.

Film a complete walk around video before you leave the shop, photograph the odometer and fuel gauge, and keep that video until the bike is returned and the deposit is refunded. If a shop still disputes damage after a documented handover, call the tourist police on 1155.

What happens if you crash anyway?
