Thailand answers, safety
Is Koh Tao dangerous?
Traveltomtom writes that violent crime affecting tourists is rare on Koh Tao and that the vast majority of visitors never experience serious issues. The island's name still carries a shadow.
What the real risks are
| Risk | What the sources say | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Road and scooter | Traveltomtom calls accidents on rented scooters the island's biggest safety risk. The UK Foreign Office adds that a helmet is required by law and that riding without a valid licence can invalidate travel insurance | Walk or take a taxi if you have never ridden; wear a helmet |
| Sea | The UK Foreign Office reports drownings in strong riptides in Thailand and jellyfish stings that can be fatal. The Koh Tao Complete Guide places the monsoon between mid November and the end of December | Swim on the sheltered coast and ask your dive school about conditions |
| Night | The UK Foreign Office warns of drink spiking in tourist areas, with male and female victims, and of assaults near bars late at night | Keep your drink in hand |
Is Koh Tao safe at night, and safe to walk?
Traveltomtom describes most evenings in the nightlife areas as social and trouble free, and advises against walking alone on poorly lit roads late at night.
Is Koh Tao safe for solo female travellers?
Traveltomtom writes that Koh Tao is generally considered safe for solo female travellers. The Koh Tao Tourism Association asks solo visitors to tell someone where they are going and not to accept drinks or rides home from strangers. We found no published crime rate for the island.
Why is it called Death Island?
On 15 September 2014, two British tourists, Hannah Witheridge and David Miller, were murdered on Sairee Beach. Two Burmese migrant workers were convicted on 24 December 2015 and sentenced to death, commuted to life imprisonment on 14 August 2020; Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch criticised the investigation. Wikipedia records a series of tourist deaths since 2014, including murder and alleged suicide, and the Death Island label that British tabloids gave the island. Nomads.com rates overall safety as bad, on reviews that cite this reputation. We report the public record and take no position on the cases.
Is Koh Tao safe from tsunami?
The risk is low. Koh Tao lies in the Gulf of Thailand, not on the Andaman coast. In The Nation on 4 October 2018, geophysicist Paiboon Nuannin of Prince of Songkla University put the threat in the gulf at perhaps nearly zero.
