Koh Tao Internet: 1,000 Mbps on Paper, 18 Mbps in Reviews

Koh Tao internet is good enough for remote work on a fibre line, with a coworking space advertising up to 1,000 Mbps down, but the island average in user reviews is 18 Mbps, because most of those tests come from shared guesthouse wifi. Both figures are accurate. They measure different things, and the one that applies to you depends on the room you rent. Every number below comes from a public source, checked on 25 September 2026.

How fast is the internet on Koh Tao?

Koh Tao internet ranges from gigabit fibre at a coworking desk to under 20 Mbps on shared wifi, and published figures sit at both ends. These are the reference points we found, each with its source and date:

The coworking figure is an advertised ceiling, not a test result. The cafe figures are single measurements published by a travel blogger in December 2025. The nomads.com figure is an average of what its users report. Treat each for what it is.

Why do Koh Tao wifi reviews say 18 Mbps?

The 18 Mbps average reflects where people test, not what the island can deliver. A traveller checks into a guesthouse, runs a speed test on a router shared by every room in the building, and posts the result. One review on the same nomads.com page says connections usually reach 300 to 400 Mbps up and down wherever there is a good router, which shows how far the setup inside a building moves the number.

Shared routers slow down when many people use them at once. That usually means evenings, when guests are back from diving and streaming. A room that tests well at noon can test badly at 20:30. Nobody publishes those contention figures for individual guesthouses, so the only way to know is to test at the hour you plan to work.

The fibre reaching the island is not the problem. Blacktip's dual fibre line shows what a private connection can carry. The weak link on Koh Tao is usually the last few metres, from the street into your room.

How fast is the wifi in Koh Tao cafes?

Most Koh Tao cafes tested in December 2025 were fast enough for a video call, and one was fast enough for large uploads. Big Tree Boutique Cafe reached 147.3 Mbps down and 251.5 Mbps up. Summer Cafe, Goodtime Beach Club and Hype Coffee all sat between 66 and 87 Mbps down. Blue Shark Cafe was the slowest, at 17.2 Mbps down.

Can you get fibre internet on Koh Tao?

Yes, in the two main villages. BAANLYY, updated 2 July 2026, reports that True and AIS run fibre in Mae Haad and Sairee Beach at roughly 500 to 900 THB a month. The quieter east coast bays, including Ao Leuk and Tanote Bay, have patchier coverage, and several resorts there run on 4G routers or satellite links instead.

To install your own line, the same source says to bring your passport and your lease. An address already wired can be connected in a few days. A new line takes longer than on the mainland, because parts and technicians often come over by boat from Koh Samui. Many long stay rooms already include wifi in the rent, so ask before ordering anything.

Fibre only works while the power is on. BAANLYY's utilities page, updated 7 July 2026, says brief outages during storms are more common on Koh Tao than on the mainland, since the island is supplied by undersea cable, and that Sairee and the east coast bays can take slightly longer to restore. Blacktip states that its backup generator powers the whole office, and its 1 month coworking pass costs 3,500 THB on its pricing page, checked 25 September 2026.

How do you check a Koh Tao rental's wifi before paying?

Check the wifi at the hour you will work, and ask how the line is set up. These five questions take about ten minutes and cover most problems:

1. Is the internet fibre or a 4G router? Both are common here and they behave differently in the evening.
2. Is the line private to the room, or shared, and with how many rooms?
3. Does the building have a generator or battery backup? A fibre line with no power does nothing.
4. Can you come back at the hour you usually work, for example 20:30, and run a speed test?
5. If you want your own line, will the landlord sign the installation paperwork? This matters for stays of several months.

Upload speed and stability matter more than the peak download figure for video calls. A speed test shows a snapshot. A twenty minute call from the room shows whether the line holds.

Which SIM works best as a backup on Koh Tao?

AIS has the widest coverage on Koh Tao, including offshore towards the dive sites, according to BAANLYY. True and dtac work well around the main beaches but thin out faster on the steep east coast roads. A prepaid starter SIM costs 50 to 200 THB and a monthly data package 300 to 600 THB, per the same page updated 2 July 2026.

The registration rules tightened in 2026. Under an NBTC notification published in the Government Gazette on 15 May 2026 and in force from 16 May 2026, foreigners register in person with a passport at a branch or authorised dealer, are limited to three SIMs per operator, and must activate a new SIM within 60 days or verify their identity again. Buy the SIM when you arrive, not later.

What do the published numbers not tell you?

No source publishes how many rooms share a given guesthouse router, and the cafe tests are single readings from December 2025. We also found no public test of island speeds during the busiest weeks of the high season. The honest summary: the 1,000 Mbps line is real and costs 3,500 THB a month at a coworking desk, and the 18 Mbps is real too, on a shared router in the evening. Which one describes your working day is decided when you choose a room.
