Thailand answers, cost of living

Can I live comfortably on $2,000 a month in Thailand?

By DigiTao editorial.

The European Central Bank reference rates of 2 October 2026 put one dollar at about 33.6 baht, so USD 2,000 is about 67,190 THB. The baht moves, so check the day's rate in Currency Check and build the month in baht.

Each line adds Numbeo's rent for a one bedroom flat to its estimate of one person's spending excluding rent, both read on 2 October 2026, in baht a month.

What version of life this buys

A flat of your own in Bangkok, Chiang Mai or Phuket and an ordinary month of food, transport and going out, with about a third to a half of the budget left over. That margin is what makes it comfortable, because the totals leave out health insurance, visa fees and flights home.

Koh Tao is the tightest of the five at the top of its band. Our Koh Tao cost of living guide builds the 35,000 to 60,000 baht band from a studio, a scooter, a coworking pass and a few dives, and Nomad Mum puts a mid range single person there at USD 1,900 a month. Nomads.com shows USD 2,305 for a nomad, a figure pulled up by short stay rents: book month by month from abroad and USD 2,000 is not enough, rent on the island and it is.

Two people on USD 2,000

Doubling the everyday line gives about 51,800 baht in central Chiang Mai and 58,800 outside the centre of Bangkok, both inside the budget. A one bedroom in central Bangkok brings a couple to about 69,900 baht, just over.

Can you stay legally on it?

The DTV asks for 500,000 baht in the bank, about USD 14,900, instead of a monthly income, and the retirement route asks for 65,000 baht a month, about USD 1,935, which USD 2,000 clears only just; our Thailand visa options guide compares them.

Set Thailand against Portugal or Vietnam in the destination comparison.
