Thailand is better than Vietnam for a remote worker who wants a legal long stay and strong private hospitals. Vietnam is better for one who wants the lowest monthly cost: Numbeo puts its cost of living 24.9 percent below Thailand's before rent. Neither wins on every line, so the honest answer depends on which of the four criteria below matters most to you.

DigiTao covers three countries only: Thailand, Portugal and Vietnam. This page compares two of them from the point of view of someone who works online for an employer or clients abroad. The DigiTao editorial team opened every source cited here on 2 October 2026.

The two Speedtest figures come from different months, so read them as "both fast" and not as a precise gap.

Which country is easier to stay in legally?

Vietnam is easier for three months, Thailand is easier for a year or more.

For a short stay, Vietnam asks less of you. Its national tourism authority states that e-visas are granted to citizens of all countries and territories for a 90-day stay with multiple entry, and the official portal charges USD 25 for a single entry and USD 50 for a multiple entry, processed within three working days. Thailand cut its visa exemption to 30 days on 15 September 2026 for the 60 countries and territories on its list, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

For a long stay, Thailand is the only one of the two with a visa written for remote work. The Royal Thai Embassy in London lists the Destination Thailand Visa as valid for five years with multiple entries, 180 days per entry and one extension of up to 180 days. Its first category is "workcation" for digital nomads, remote workers and freelancers. The London embassy charges GBP 300 and asks for financial evidence of at least GBP 12,000 (500,000 THB) and a police clearance certificate.

Vietnam has nothing comparable. ExpatDen's guide of 20 August 2026 puts it plainly: Vietnam has no digital nomad visa and no remote work visa, and most remote workers rely on the 90-day e-visa, which does not authorise work. Staying longer means leaving and applying again. We compare the two routes in detail in Thailand DTV vs Vietnam e-visa, and you can check your own passport in Visa Check.

Is Vietnam cheaper than Thailand?

Yes. On Numbeo's country comparison, read on 2 October 2026, the cost of living in Vietnam is 24.9 percent lower than in Thailand before rent and 24.4 percent lower with rent included, and rents are 22.6 percent lower. Numbeo's mid 2026 country index gives Thailand 36.8 and Vietnam 26.9.

National averages hide the place you actually choose. Our two bases show it. On Koh Tao, BAANLYY prices a one-bedroom at 12,000 to 22,000 THB a month in Sairee and puts a single person's budget month at 30,000 to 50,000 THB, which it converts to about USD 860 to 1,430. In Da Nang, Numbeo lists a one-bedroom in the centre at about USD 525 and a single person's costs before rent at about USD 445, and Nomads.com shows USD 919 a month for a nomad. A small island supplied by ferry is not priced like a mainland city, so compare places, not only countries. For three countries side by side, see which of our three countries is cheapest. Our Koh Tao cost of living guide and Da Nang cost of living guide price each line.

Which country has better internet?

Both countries have fast national networks, and Vietnam has moved ahead on the latest published figures. Viet Nam News reported on 4 September 2026 that Vietnam ranked seventh in the world for fixed broadband on the Speedtest Global Index for July 2026, with a median download speed of 307.11 Mbps, and tenth for mobile at 205.58 Mbps. WorldData, citing the same index for May 2026, lists Thailand at 286.11 Mbps on fixed broadband (14th) and 137.28 Mbps on mobile (35th).

What you get at your desk depends on the address. Nomads.com shows an average of 18 Mbps on Ko Tao and 7 Mbps in Da Nang, crowd-sourced averages, not a measurement of a fibre line in your own flat. On an island, plan on a coworking space or a second connection. Our internet guide explains how to test a place before you commit to it.

Where is healthcare better?

Thailand, by a clear margin on the published indexes. Numbeo's Health Care Index for mid 2026 ranks Thailand sixth of 101 countries with a score of 77.6, and Vietnam 54th with 62.8. Allianz Care describes Thai private hospitals as having highly qualified staff and sophisticated medical facilities, and adds a warning that matters to anyone uninsured: private hospitals often ask for proof of funds before treating a patient without cover.

In Vietnam, the practical advice for foreigners is to use private and international hospitals. Local Vietnam's hospital guide, last updated in January 2025, names Vinmec, which has a hospital in Da Nang, and FV Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, and notes that public hospitals are affordable but crowded, with staff who mostly speak Vietnamese.

Geography matters as much as the country. Koh Tao has no large hospital, and anything serious goes to Koh Samui by boat, which our Thailand healthcare guide describes. Da Nang has an international hospital in the city. On this one point, our Vietnamese base beats our Thai one. This is general information, not medical advice: check what your own insurer covers in each country before you travel.

So which one should you choose?

  1. Choose Thailand if you want one visa that covers several years, you can show 500,000 THB, and access to top private hospitals on the mainland matters to you.
  2. Choose Vietnam if your priority is the lowest monthly cost, you are happy to plan your stay in 90-day blocks, and you want a city base with an international hospital in town.
  3. Check tax before either if you expect to spend about half the year in one country. Thailand counts more than 180 days in a calendar year and Vietnam 183 days, and both then tax residents. Our Thai tax guide and Vietnam tax guide explain what follows, and how the three countries tax foreign income sets them side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Is Thailand better than Vietnam for digital nomads?

Thailand is better for a legal long stay and for healthcare: the DTV gives five years of 180-day entries, and Numbeo ranks Thai healthcare sixth of 101 countries. Vietnam is better on cost, about 24.9 percent lower before rent on Numbeo, and has no remote work visa. Choose by what matters most to you.

Is Vietnam cheaper than Thailand?

Yes. Numbeo's comparison, read on 2 October 2026, puts the cost of living in Vietnam 24.9 percent below Thailand before rent and rents 22.6 percent lower. The gap widens if you compare a Thai island with a Vietnamese city: a one-bedroom in central Da Nang lists at about USD 525 a month.

Is the internet faster in Thailand or in Vietnam?

Both are fast. On the Speedtest Global Index, Vietnam had a median fixed broadband download of 307.11 Mbps in July 2026 (7th in the world) and Thailand 286.11 Mbps in May 2026 (14th). Speeds at a given address vary far more than that, especially on islands, so test before you sign a lease.

Which is better for a long stay, Thailand or Vietnam?

Thailand. Its Destination Thailand Visa lasts five years and allows 180 days per entry for remote workers who can show 500,000 THB. Vietnam has no remote work visa: most people use the 90-day e-visa at USD 25 or 50, then leave and apply again. Compare the two routes.
