Da Nang or Hoi An for digital nomads in 2026: rent, internet and flood risk

Da Nang is the stronger base for most remote workers in 2026: more coworking spaces, better tested internet, and full service hospitals inside the city. Hoi An sits about thirty kilometres south, folded into the same city since 2025, and offers a quieter old town with its own small coworking hub, a real trade for anyone who finds An Thuong too loud. The number most people do not expect: on Nomads.com's current figures, a nomad month in Hoi An costs more than one in Da Nang, not less. Below, we compare rent, cost of living, coworking, internet, flooding, airport access, healthcare and community, every figure sourced and dated.

Is Hoi An cheaper than Da Nang?

Not on the headline number. Nomads.com's cost of living data, updated 26 September 2026, puts a nomad month in Hoi An at USD 1,499 against USD 919 in Da Nang, and an expat month at USD 1,218 against USD 995. Only the family budget flips the other way: USD 1,906 in Hoi An against USD 2,179 in Da Nang. Rent alone tells a different story again. Nomads.com lists a centre studio in Hoi An at USD 433, cheaper than Da Nang's USD 522, and bucketlistbri.com prices a place outside the Old Town at USD 400 to 500 a month, the same band our Da Nang cost of living guide gives for a one bedroom near My Khe beach, USD 400 to 550.

The nomad average is pulled up by boutique villas and short furnished stays that Hoi An's tourism market sells hard and Da Nang's does not, the kind of distortion our guide already flags when Nomads.com is set against a plain rent quote. Which has better internet, Da Nang or Hoi An?

Da Nang, and by a wide margin of testing, not only speed. Two Packs and a Pup measured nine An Thuong cafes and found downloads from 21 to 173 Mbps, with Dng.coffee the pick for calls at 152 Mbps down and 53 up. Hoi An has far fewer independent tests: bucketlistbri.com only calls the wifi there "generally reliable and fast" for a small coastal town, without measured numbers, and Nomads.com's own crowd sourced figure, the same kind of stale average that also understates Da Nang, puts Hoi An at just 10 Mbps. Treat both numbers as a starting point, not a guarantee, and test the actual line before committing to a month. Where do you find coworking space in either city?

Da Nang wins on choice. Nine spaces run from 1.8 million VND a month at Circo in Hai Chau to 4.5 million VND at HIVE in An Thuong, most with day passes under 260,000 VND, all detailed in our coworking spaces answer. Hoi An has one name that keeps coming up: Hub Hoi An, with hot desks from 1,200,000 to 1,500,000 VND a month (about USD 50 to 60), cheaper than every Da Nang space listed, Circo's 1.8 million VND included, according to Digital Nomad Guides. Nomads.com's own average hot desk price for Hoi An, USD 154 a month, sits far above Hub Hoi An's rate and reflects the same short stay, resort skewed sample as the cost of living figures above.

Is Hoi An too touristy for remote work?

For a working day, less than its reputation suggests, but the crowds are real. Hoi An's Old Town is one of the most visited sights in the country, and Da Nang city, which now administratively includes it, took in more than 17.3 million visitors in 2025. bucketlistbri.com describes Hoi An's nomad scene as smaller and more seasonal than Da Nang's, organised through Facebook groups such as Hoi An Expats and Vietnam Digital Nomads rather than a daily meetup calendar. An Thuong in Da Nang has the busier, younger crowd and a Friday meetup with more than 1,500 members; Hoi An suits someone who wants quiet mornings and does not mind fewer familiar faces at lunch. How do you get between Hoi An and the airport?

Every flight in or out goes through Da Nang International Airport, inside Da Nang and about a ten minute ride from the centre, against a 45 minute, 30 kilometre run from Hoi An. Wikivoyage prices a fixed rate taxi from the airport to Hoi An at 300,000 to 500,000 VND, a shared shuttle at 130,000 VND a person, and Grab, usually the cheapest option, at around 120,000 VND. Basing yourself in Hoi An adds that ride to every flight, every visa run and every late courier delivery; basing yourself in Da Nang removes it.

What happens when the Thu Bon river floods?

It floods most years, and 2025 was the worst on record. A normal October brings about 628 mm of rain to the Da Nang area and November about 448 mm, per the city's building climate normals; 2025 went far past both. Rain on 26 and 27 October 2025 sent the Hoai River, the old town's own channel, over its banks, and the People's Committee logged floodwaters at 1.78 metres by 4 AM on the 27th, according to VietNamNet. The Thu Bon river itself, which the Hoai branches from, kept rising and peaked at 5.62 metres, 14 centimetres above the 1964 benchmark and a new record for the gauge, per VnExpress International. Da Nang's own riverside wards went under 1 to 2.5 metres of water in the same rains, so neither side of the city stayed dry that week, but Hoi An's low, riverside Old Town usually takes it worse: Wikivoyage notes that Hoi An "regularly floods during November" even outside a record year. Where do you go for healthcare from Hoi An?

For anything routine, Hoi An now has its own private option. Saigon Hoi An General Hospital, at 06 Phan Dinh Phung in what is now Hoi An Tay ward, Da Nang city, runs an international department with expatriate doctors alongside local staff, and covers emergency care, imaging, surgery and vaccinations. For a specialist, an admission, or anything that needs Vinmec's 24 hour international department, the ride is the same one you take to the airport: about 30 kilometres and 45 minutes to Da Nang's Hai Chau ward, where Vinmec, Hoan My and the public Da Nang Hospital sit close together. So, Da Nang or Hoi An?

Pick Da Nang for the most coworking choice, the fastest airport run, and hospitals on your own side of the river. Pick Hoi An for a quieter old town, if you do not mind a scooter or Grab ride to everything else, and can plan around a hard flood season.

1. Working European or American hours from a desk: Da Nang, for the 24 hour coworking options.
2. Staying only from October to January: Da Nang, since Hoi An's flood risk is worse in exactly those months.
3. Coming for a slower first month before deciding anything: Hoi An, then a scooter ride to Da Nang whenever needed.
4. Bringing a family with school age children: Da Nang, for the international schools and the shorter hospital ride.
