When is typhoon season in Da Nang and how bad does it get?

Da Nang sits on the stretch of coast where most tropical storms make landfall, so the question each autumn is how many and how strong, not whether. The Vietnam National Authority of Tourism gives the season as July to December, peaking mid September to mid November; the 72 hour forecast track is accurate to within 100 to 150 km, enough warning to prepare.

How often, and how bad

A typical storm means two or three days indoors, flooded side streets, a few hours to a day without power, and flight delays of 12 to 24 hours at peak storm alerts. Wind damage to modern buildings is rare; water is the real hazard.

The 2025 reference case

The autumn of 2025 shows the worst end of the range. Between 16 October and 6 December 2025 a sequence of storms and monsoon rain flooded central Vietnam; at least 219 people were dead or missing and damage reached USD 1.61 billion, of which USD 33.2 million was in Da Nang. From 26 to 29 October, low lying and riverside wards in Da Nang went 1 to 2.5 metres under water, schools closed and residents were moved by boat; more than 36,000 officers and soldiers were mobilised in the city. Typhoon Kalmaegi made landfall on 6 November 2025 further south, in Gia Lai and Dak Lak provinces, and still added rain and river rises across the wider central coast, including a second surge in Da Nang on 3 November as the storm approached.

What to do when a storm is forecast

1. Follow nchmf.gov.vn, the national forecasting centre, for official alerts and the storm's track.
2. Buy water and food for three days; charge power banks and laptops.
3. Withdraw about 3 million VND in cash, because ATMs go offline in long power cuts.
4. Move your scooter off the ground floor and away from the river.
5. Stay in for two to three days; do not go near the beach, where red flags fly all season for 2 to 3 metre waves and rip currents.

Where you live matters more than anything else. An upper floor in An Thuong or on the My Khe front is fine in almost every storm; a ground floor near the Han River is not.
