How long does the D8 visa take from application to residence card in 2026?
No single body owns this timeline, which is why nobody publishes a service standard for it. Three do: the consulate or visa centre that issues the visa, you crossing the border inside the visa window, and AIMA once you are in Portugal. The figure practitioners published for the D8 end to end in June 2026 was six to nine months.

The official numbers against what people report
The published rules are firm: four months of visa validity, two entries, and an obligation to lodge the permit application with AIMA inside that window. Everything before and after that window is reported practice from advisers, not a legal deadline, and it moves with the season and the consulate. A file lodged in May behind the summer queue is not the same file lodged in November.
What genuinely improved is throughput. AIMA's own Relatorio de Migracoes e Asilo 2025 puts the final count at 337,880 new residence titles issued in 2025, 55 percent more than in 2024, plus 189,331 renewals. An interim figure of 386,000 circulated earlier in the year; the annual report is the one to cite. The actively pending caseload was estimated at 40,000 to 60,000 in early 2026, down from more than 400,000. The older forum horror stories describe a system that no longer exists, but the tail is still long.
Where the weeks go missing
Book the consulate slot before the file is finished, because the slot is usually the bottleneck. Order the police certificate late enough that it is still fresh at the appointment and early enough that the apostille is back. Carry the visa, the AIMA receipt and the registered lease together, because each stage asks for the one before it.
