What is the difference between the D8 temporary stay visa and the D8 residence visa?
Both are called the D8 and both are for people who work remotely for clients or employers outside Portugal. They ask for the same 3,680 euros a month in 2026. What separates them is what you get at the end.

Which one a nomad actually wants
If you want to try Portugal for a year, keep your tax residency and your life elsewhere, and fly in and out without asking anyone, the temporary stay track is genuinely simpler. No AIMA appointment, no biometrics queue, no residence card. The cost is that the clock never starts: two years on it leave you exactly where you began.
If you are moving, take the residence track. It is slower and heavier, and it is the only version that builds toward the five year permanent residence mark and the naturalisation clock, which starts on the date your first residence permit is issued.
The trap between them
The temporary stay visa does not quietly become a residence permit. When it runs out, or when its single extension runs out, you are applying again from your country of residence with a new file. Consulate practice on extending a temporary stay visa varies, and it is handled by the consulate that issued it, not by AIMA.
