How long does it take to get a family doctor in Portugal?

This is the question where most guides get vague, so here is the split between the rule, the reality and the workaround.

What the system promises

Registering at the centro de saude for your address, which is also how you get your numero de utente, puts you in the queue for a medico de familia at that centre. Assignment happens when a list opens, which depends on doctors retiring, arriving or having their patient lists resized. No service standard commits the SNS to a waiting time, which is why no honest source quotes one.

What people actually experience

The scale of the shortage is published and it is large: 1,672,130 people in Portugal had no assigned family doctor at the end of June 2026, according to the SNS transparency portal figures reported by Observador. About 1.18 million of them, or 70.5 percent, were in the Lisboa e Vale do Tejo region, which is precisely where most new arrivals land. Some people are assigned within weeks when a new doctor joins their centre. Others hold a numero de utente for years without one. Both are normal.

What you do in the meantime

Call SNS 24 on 808 24 24 24 for triage, advice, referrals and video consultations, and use the consulta aberta, the open surgery slot at your centro de saude, for a same day acute problem.
