How do I get a numero de utente, the SNS number, in Portugal?

The numero de utente is your user number in the Servico Nacional de Saude. It is what a receptionist asks for before anything else, it is what the pharmacy needs to apply the state subsidy to a prescription, and it is what gets you onto the list for a family doctor. Nobody posts it to you, so it is a first month errand.

Where to go and what to bring

Your registration is tied to your address, so it is the centro de saude for your parish, not any centre you like. Bring the passport, the residence document, the NIF and something proving where you live, such as a lease or a utility bill. You do not need a NISS: the checklist is identity, tax number, address and residence authorisation, and the social security number is a separate errand.

Since July 2024 you can also ask at a local Espaco Cidadao, which matters more than it sounds. Health centre desks apply the rules unevenly, and a second counter that does the same job is often faster than arguing at the first one. While your AIMA process is still open

This is the common case for new arrivals, and the honest answer is that practice varies. Guides report that the AIMA receipt, the proof that your residence application was submitted, gives access to the SNS from the submission date, and many centres accept it. Others ask for the card itself. If you are refused, try the Espaco Cidadao route, and go back with the printed receipt rather than a screenshot.
