Porto vs Lisbon cost of living in 2026: a side by side budget for a remote couple

Porto is cheaper than Lisbon, but by about 14 percent for a remote couple, not the 30 percent often quoted: a model budget comes to roughly 2,650 euros a month in Porto against 3,090 in Lisbon, on September 2026 prices. Rent explains almost all of the difference.

This is a model, not a household's bank statement, built only from public, dated sources: INE (Statistics Portugal), Numbeo, rental market reports and published provider prices. The Lisbon column is the middle scenario of our sourced Lisbon budget for a remote couple, so the two pages agree. The model household is two adults working remotely, a T1 (one bedroom flat), no car and no children.

Is Porto cheaper than Lisbon?

Yes. Porto is about 14 percent cheaper for a remote couple in the middle scenario, and 10 to 12 percent cheaper at the lean and comfortable ends.

Where each line comes from:

1. Rent. Investropa puts the average one bedroom at about 1,350 euros in Lisbon (band 1,250 to 1,450) and about 1,000 euros in Porto (band 900 to 1,150), both updated 21 September 2026.
2. Everyday costs. Numbeo estimates a single person's monthly costs excluding rent at 760.90 euros in Lisbon (updated 24 September 2026) and 717.40 euros in Porto (updated 23 September 2026). We doubled both for two. Numbeo does not publish the breakdown, so treat these as planning figures.
3. Coworking. In Lisbon, Monis lists hot desks at 125 euros at IDEA Spaces and Lisbon WorkHub (August 2026); LACS has since moved to day and desk tiers rather than a flat monthly rate. In Porto, Facts Coworking publishes a shared desk at 100 euros a month on a monthly plan, plus VAT at 23 percent, so about 123 euros.
4. Health insurance. Private plans are priced nationally. Feather gives 30 to 60 euros a month per adult for a basic plan (28 April 2026); the model uses 45 each in both cities.

The lean and comfortable ends follow the same method. With Numbeo's one bedroom rents outside the centre (1,067 euros in Lisbon, 852 in Porto), no desk and basic insurance at 30 each, a couple pays about 2,649 euros in Lisbon and 2,347 in Porto. With a city centre flat (1,419 and 1,153), a single desk (175 euros at Cowork Central in Lisbon, 150 plus VAT at Facts in Porto) and comprehensive insurance at 115 each, the totals are about 3,346 and 3,003.

How much cheaper is rent in Porto than in Lisbon?

Rent in Porto is about 17 to 26 percent lower than in Lisbon, depending on the source. The official figure is the lower one.

INE counts contracts declared to the tax authority, so its medians are agreed rents, not asking prices. In the 12 months to March 2026, Lisbon had the highest median in the country at 17.22 euros per square metre. Porto, at 14.29 over the same 12 months to March 2026, was the most expensive municipality in its metropolitan area, and its rents rose 5.5 percent in a year, slightly faster than Lisbon's 4.9 percent (INE, 26 June 2026).

Asking rents show the same order. Investropa gives about 22 euros per square metre for Lisbon listings and about 18 for Porto, with Foz do Douro at 22 to 28 euros and Cedofeita and Boavista at 19 to 24. The best Porto neighbourhoods cost as much per square metre as an average Lisbon listing, so compare flats of the same standard, not a renovated flat in one city with an old one in the other.

Are everyday costs lower in Porto?

Only slightly: outside rent, Porto saves a couple about 87 euros a month in this model. Most individual prices are almost the same.

Eating out is where Porto pulls ahead. Bills and transport are effectively the same, and internet is slightly dearer in the Porto sample.

What does a remote worker pay for coworking in Porto and Lisbon?

A monthly desk starts at about the same price in both cities, but Lisbon's ceiling is far higher. In Lisbon, Monis lists 125 euros at IDEA Spaces and Lisbon WorkHub and 175 at Cowork Central (August 2026); on their own sites, Heden lists memberships from 99 euros with VAT included, Second Home a roaming desk from 165 plus VAT and a resident desk from 325, and LACS and Impact Hub now price by desk type from 220 plus VAT. In Porto, Facts Coworking publishes 100 to 150 euros a month before VAT, or 88 to 138 on a quarterly plan. For occasional days, Wezoo lists a day pass at Vertical Bolhao, in central Porto, at 22.69 euros including VAT (July 2026), while Lisbon day passes run from about 10 to 25 euros.

Does the gap grow for a family?

Yes. A family pays more in both cities, and the gap in euros is wider than for a couple.

1. Housing. Numbeo lists a three bedroom flat in the centre at 2,526 euros in Lisbon and 2,014 in Porto, a gap of 512 euros a month. Outside the centre, it is 1,767 against 1,465, a gap of 302.
2. Everyday costs. Numbeo estimates a family of four at 2,745.70 euros a month in Lisbon and 2,571.40 in Porto, excluding rent: 174 euros apart.
3. School fees. Oporto British School charges 9,530 euros a year for its youngest classes and 16,115 euros in total for IGCSE years 9 and 10 in 2026/2027. TASIS Portugal, in Sintra near Lisbon, charges 23,093 euros for grades 9 and 10, plus a 750 euro re-enrolment fee. That is about 7,700 euros a year per child between these two schools. They are two examples, not city averages.

Choice is the counterweight. Global Citizen Solutions counts about 38 international schools in the Lisbon metropolitan area and about 8 in the Porto area, with a national median tuition of about 12,000 euros a year (September 2026). Porto or Lisbon: which should a remote worker choose on cost?

Choose on cost only if rent is your main worry. For a couple, the gap is about 300 to 440 euros a month, or 3,600 to 5,300 euros a year.

1. Price your own flat first. Rent is the only line that moves the total by hundreds of euros.
2. Compare flats of the same standard: same building age, same distance to the metro.
