Cost of living in Lisbon for a family of four: a sourced 2026 monthly budget

A family of four in Lisbon needs about 4,300 euros a month in 2026 with public school and a T3 in the wider Lisbon area, and about 8,800 euros with international school and a T3 in the centre. The school line, not the rent, is what moves the total.

This budget is built from official rent statistics, a crowd sourced price index and school fee tables, and shows every assumption so you can swap in your own. The household is two adults working remotely, two children aged 7 and 11, a three bedroom flat (a T3, which we size at 100 square metres) and no car.

How much does a family of four need per month in Lisbon?

Between roughly 4,300 and 8,800 euros a month, depending on the school and the address.

The everyday line is the same in both columns on purpose: it changes least with your choices. Health insurance uses Feather's April 2026 ranges of 30 to 60 euros a month per adult (basic) and 80 to 150 (comprehensive); children are not priced there, so ask for a family quote. What does a T3 cost to rent in Lisbon in 2026?

A 100 square metre T3 on a new lease costs about 1,742 euros a month in the Lisbon municipality and about 1,438 euros across Greater Lisbon, on official median figures. INE, Statistics Portugal, published on 26 June 2026 that the median rent of new leases in the first quarter of 2026 was 17.42 euros per square metre in Lisbon, up 8.2 percent in a year, and 14.38 euros per square metre in the Greater Lisbon subregion. The national median was 9.46 euros.

INE counts contracts declared to the tax authority, so these are agreed rents, not asking prices. Numbeo's crowd figures for a three bedroom flat in September 2026 are 2,526.09 euros in the city centre and 1,767.39 outside it. It uses INE's Greater Lisbon median for the low scenario and Numbeo's centre figure for the comfortable one.

What do groceries, bills and transport cost a family in Lisbon?

Numbeo estimates 2,745.70 euros a month for a family of four in Lisbon, excluding rent. That figure came from 1,831 entries by 209 contributors over the past 12 months, last updated on 24 September 2026. It is a crowd estimate: contributors are self selected, and Numbeo does not publish the breakdown behind it. Treat it as a planning figure, not a quote.

1. Utilities for an 85 square metre flat: 147.65 euros a month.
2. Home internet: 29.12 euros. A mobile plan with 10 GB or more: 16.12 euros per line.

4. A meal in an inexpensive restaurant: 15 euros.

Transport is cheaper for families than most budgets assume. Metropolitano de Lisboa lists the Navegante Municipal pass at 30 euros and the Navegante Metropolitano at 40 euros a month, and young people aged 4 to 23 travel free on a personalised Navegante card. Two adult passes come to 60 or 80 euros, and the children cost nothing.

How much are international school fees in Lisbon?

Published fees for 2026/2027 run from 6,098 to 29,970 euros a year per child across Lisbon's international and foreign curriculum schools, according to the International Schools Database. For the two children in this model, the school line is the biggest decision in the budget.

TASIS Portugal in Sintra publishes 17,290 euros a year for Kindergarten to Grade 2 and 20,028 euros for Grades 6 to 8. A 7 year old and an 11 year old would cost 37,318 euros a year, or 3,110 euros a month. That fee includes books, lunch with two snacks, after school clubs and field trips. The school bus is not included.

St Julian's School in Carcavelos lists 16,416 euros for Grade 2 and 19,323 euros for Grade 6 in 2026/2027, so 35,739 euros a year for the same pair.

The first year costs more than the monthly figure shows. TASIS charges a one time, non refundable campus enhancement fee of 5,000 euros from Kindergarten up and a 100 euro application fee. St Julian's lists a 5,000 euro capital levy, a 750 euro registration fee and a 250 euro application fee. Both give 15 percent off the third child.

Is there a middle option between public and international school?

Yes: several foreign curriculum schools charge well under 10,000 euros a year. The International Schools Database lists 2026/2027 ranges of 6,098 to 7,609 euros at the Lycee Francais Charles Lepierre, 8,385 to 8,615 euros at the Deutsche Schule Lissabon, 7,140 euros at Brave Generation Academy and 9,860 to 12,850 euros at Beyond International School.

Two children at the top of the Deutsche Schule range cost 17,230 euros a year, or about 1,436 euros a month before lunches. Swap that into the low scenario and the family total becomes about 5,680 euros a month. Language of instruction matters here: the French and German schools teach largely in French or German.

What does public school really cost in Portugal?

Public school is free from preschool to year 12, and the family pays mainly for meals and extended hours. The Portugal Brief's 2026 guide puts a canteen lunch at about 1.46 euros a day in most public schools, so two children over 20 school days cost about 58 euros a month. Before and after school hours cost extra, at rates set by each council, so ask the school.

Children who arrive without Portuguese follow Portugues Lingua Nao Materna (PLNM), the national route for non native speakers. The Direcao-Geral da Educacao places pupils at the A1, A2 or B1 level under Portaria 223-A/2018. Private tutoring is extra.

Timing matters. For 2026/2027, enrolment for preschool and the first year ran from 22 April to 1 June 2026, with other year groups in June and July. Pupils with credentials from a foreign school can enrol outside those windows, as long as there is a place in an existing class.

Can a family on a remote salary get child benefit in Portugal?

Usually not for children over six. Montepio's 2026 table of the abono de familia pays 75.13 euros a month for a child older than 72 months in the first two brackets, 54.35 euros in the third, and nothing from the fourth, which starts at a reference income of 12,783.69 euros. Two remote salaries usually land there, so this budget counts no benefit.

How to turn these figures into your own budget

1. Pick the school route first, then the neighbourhood. The school line swings the total by up to 3,000 euros a month.
2. Price rent from the INE median for your municipality, then add a margin if you need to be near a specific school.
3. Keep the Numbeo everyday figure as a ceiling check, and replace lines with your own spending where you know it.
4. Add the first year one off fees separately: they can pass 10,000 euros for two children at an international school.
