Does travel insurance cover motorbike accidents in Thailand?

This is the most expensive gap in a nomad's insurance, and it is almost never found before the accident. The shop hands over a 125cc automatic against a deposit, nobody asks for a licence, and it feels like renting a bicycle. Your policy was written by people who assumed someone would ask.

What insurers look at

The UK Foreign Office advice for Thailand says you need the 1968 International Driving Permit together with your home licence, that helmets are compulsory by law for motorcycle riders, and that riding without a valid licence could invalidate your travel insurance and leave you unable to claim. It adds that many insurers want you to hold the right home licence for the vehicle type, so if you could not legally ride it at home, your insurer may not cover you abroad.

The car licence trap

A permit issued on a car licence carries the car category only. Wonderland Koh Tao, a local rental guide, states that a car licence alone does not cover a scooter, and that without a valid motorcycle licence almost every travel policy treats you as riding illegally and pays nothing. The fact that the shop accepted your car permit proves nothing about your cover.

Before you ride

2. Read your policy's motorcycle clause, including any engine size limit, before you read the price.
3. Wear the helmet, even for the two minute ride to the shop.
4. Leave a cash deposit or a passport copy, never the passport itself.
