Is $3,000 a month enough to live in Thailand?

By DigiTao editorial.

The European Central Bank reference rates of 2 October 2026 put one dollar at about 33.6 baht, so USD 3,000 is about 100,785 THB. Run your own income through Currency Check on the day, because a one baht move changes this budget by 3,000 baht.

Each line adds Numbeo's rent to its estimate of spending excluding rent, both read on 2 October 2026. For a couple we double the single person estimate.

What version of life this buys

For one person, the top of the range: a central flat, restaurants, a gym, regular flights, and more than half the income unspent. For a couple, a comfortable month in Bangkok or Phuket with about 30,000 baht left for insurance and travel.

On Koh Tao the picture is the same for one or two people. Nomad Mum, updated on 8 September 2026, puts a single person at USD 1,400 to 2,500 and up, a couple at USD 2,200 to 3,700 and up and a family of four at USD 2,800 to 4,800 and up, so USD 3,000 covers a couple in the middle of the band and a family only at the bottom of it. Our Koh Tao cost of living guide shows the lines behind those bands.

Where it runs out

Children. Numbeo's family of four in Bangkok already passes the budget before school, and international school fees come on top. A villa does the same: BAANLYY puts a premium villa month on Koh Tao at 130,000 to 280,000 baht.

Can you stay legally on it?

USD 3,000 a month clears the 65,000 baht income line of the retirement route for people aged 50 and over, while remote workers under that age usually use the DTV, which asks for 500,000 baht in savings; our Thailand visa options guide sets out both.

Compare the same income in Portugal or Vietnam in the destination comparison.
