Thailand answers, cost of living

Can you retire in Thailand on $1,000 a month?

By DigiTao editorial.

Two questions hide in this one: whether the money covers a month, and whether it lets you stay. The European Central Bank reference rates of 2 October 2026 put one dollar at about 33.6 baht, so USD 1,000 is about 33,595 THB. A pension paid in dollars moves with the rate, so check it in Currency Check.

What version of life this buys

A modest flat away from the centre of Chiang Mai, local food, and under 6,000 baht a month of margin. On Koh Tao the same money buys the island's low budget version, a fan room and Thai kitchens, which we price in living on Koh Tao for USD 1,000 a month.

The line missing from every total above is health insurance, and for a retiree it is the one that decides. The Non-Immigrant O-A visa requires a policy with cover of at least USD 100,000 or 3,000,000 baht, and premiums rise with age. Get a quote for your own age before you rely on this budget, and read our healthcare and health insurance guide for what hospitals charge without one.

Can you stay legally on it?

The retirement route is open from age 50 and asks for a monthly income of at least 65,000 baht, about USD 1,935, or a balance of 800,000 baht, about USD 23,800. A pension of USD 1,000 is roughly half the income line, so the deposit is what gets you the visa, and it has to exist on top of the monthly budget. Our Thailand visa options guide explains both routes and the insurance rule.

If the numbers are tight, compare Thailand with Vietnam in the destination comparison.
