Portugal answers, housing
Which Lisbon neighbourhood is best for digital nomads?
There is no single right answer, but there are four clear trade offs, and rent is the one that moves most.
Four realistic choices
Arroios, the default. Central without being a postcard, mixed rather than touristy, dense with cafés and on the green metro line. A one bedroom runs about 1,000 to 1,300 euros (The London Thing, 2026).
Príncipe Real and Cais do Sodré, the social option. Terraces, restaurants and the busiest nightlife. One bedroom flats in Príncipe Real ask 1,600 to 2,000 euros and more, so you pay several hundred euros a month over Arroios for the scene. Santo António, the parish that covers much of this area, is the dearest in the city at about 27 euros per square metre (Investropa).
Alvalade and Avenidas Novas, the quiet and flat option. Wide avenues, less nightlife, and far fewer hills than the old centre, which matters more than you think in July. Avenidas Novas asks 1,400 to 1,800 euros for a one bedroom.
Alcântara, the work first option. Close to LX Factory and the riverside, quieter at night, and part of Investropa's young professional band at 1,200 to 1,700 euros a month.
Where expats live, and why
The pattern behind all four is the same: a metro station within a short, flat walk, cafés you can work from, and a lease you can hold for a year. The historic quarters of Alfama and Graça are beautiful, but the climbs are steep, so walk the route from the flat to the nearest station before you commit. Our one to two week Lisbon workation itinerary plans work mornings and day trips around a base near Cais do Sodre or Baixa-Chiado, on the same logic of a short, flat walk to the metro.
What to check before you sign
- The building's internet. Fibre covers most of the city, but confirm the flat itself is connected, not just the street.
- Your desk. Where you rent matters less than which coworking space you join: prices are in our Lisbon coworking answer.
- The hills. A flat ten minutes from the metro on a map can be twenty minutes uphill.
- The lease. A standard residential lease runs at least a year, and the deposit and advance rent are capped at two months each.
