Where should I live in Porto as an expat family?

Porto is small enough that nothing is far, so the choice comes down to space, school run and how much sea you want.

The four options families actually pick

Foz do Douro and Nevogilde. The coast, the gardens, the promenade, the tennis and swimming clubs, and both of the big international schools nearby. Also the most expensive part of the city at 22 to 28 euros per square metre, well above the city's 18.

Boavista and Massarelos. Central, leafy, big flats in solid buildings, walking distance to Serralves and its park, on the metro. The usual compromise between Foz prices and city convenience.

Cedofeita and Bonfim. Urban family life: markets, playgrounds, schools, the best food, plenty of noise. Cheaper per square metre and close to everything.

Ramalde, Paranhos, Campanha and Vila Nova de Gaia. Where the space per euro is. The metro runs through Ramalde and Paranhos, and Gaia sits ten minutes across the bridge with the beaches at Canidelo and Miramar. Numbeo's out of centre one bedroom median is 851.79 euros against 1,153.33 in the centre.

Schools decide a lot of this

Porto's international options are concentrated on the western side. Oporto British School charges 9,530 euros a year for the youngest classes rising to 17,570 for the IB diploma years in 2026/2027, plus registration and capital charges. CLIP Oporto International School runs 9,572 euros for kindergarten to 15,924 for grades 11 and 12, including its annual registration fee. Public school is free and enrolment for 2026/2027 ran from 22 April to 1 June 2026, though pupils arriving from foreign schools may enrol outside the standard window where places exist.

Budget

Numbeo puts a family of four in Porto at 2,571.40 euros a month excluding rent, with a three bedroom at 2,013.85 in the centre or 1,465 outside. Add international school and the picture changes entirely, which is why it belongs on its own line.
