How much cheaper is Porto than Lisbon for one person living alone?

Living alone changes the arithmetic, because one person carries a whole flat. Almost all of the difference between the two cities sits in that one line.

The monthly gap for one person

How we built it: living costs are Numbeo's single person estimate excluding rent, 760.90 euros in Lisbon (updated 24 September 2026) and 717.40 in Porto (updated 23 September 2026). The average rents are Investropa's T1 figures, about 1,350 euros in Lisbon and 1,000 in Porto (both updated 21 September 2026). The centre and outside rents are Numbeo's: 1,419.23 and 1,067.20 euros in Lisbon, 1,153.33 and 851.79 in Porto.

Where the gap comes from

Rent is 215 to 350 euros of it. Everything else, from groceries to the 40 euro metropolitan transport pass that both cities charge, adds only 43.50 euros. Numbeo's own index says Porto is 8.2 percent less expensive than Lisbon excluding rent and 19.1 percent cheaper on rent.

So if you would share a flat in either city, the saving shrinks to little more than the 43.50 euros. If you want a one bedroom of your own, Porto is worth roughly a month of Lisbon living costs back every two months.

When the gap narrows

Compare the same kind of flat. Porto's dearest neighbourhoods ask Lisbon money: Investropa puts Foz do Douro and Nevogilde at 22 to 28 euros per square metre and Cedofeita at 19 to 24. A renovated flat in Foz and an old one in Arroios can cost the same.
