Can I give birth in Portugal as a foreigner and what does it cost?
Portugal delivers babies well and cheaply, and the public maternity units are where most residents, Portuguese or not, have theirs.
The public route
Register with the SNS as soon as you have an address and a residence document, then ask at your centro de saude to be booked into antenatal care. Scans, midwife appointments, the delivery itself and the postnatal stay carry no charge for a registered resident. Your assigned maternity unit follows your address, and it is not always the nearest hospital, so ask early rather than on the day.
The private route, with prices

Those are 2026 figures from private hospital packages and guides, and they cover the delivery and the stay rather than the whole pregnancy. If you are counting on insurance to pay, read the maternity waiting period first: a policy taken out after you conceived will not cover this birth.
Registering the baby
You have 20 days to register the birth at a Conservatoria do Registo Civil. Easier still, most maternity units run a Nascer Cidadao desk that registers the child for free before you leave the ward, which is the option to take if you are offered it.
On nationality
A baby born in Portugal to foreign parents does not automatically become Portuguese the way it once did. Lei Organica 1/2026, in force since 19 May 2026, raised the residence bar: a child born here now needs a parent who already had five years of legal residence at the time of the birth, up from just one year before the reform.
