Is travel insurance mandatory for Thailand?

No. Thailand Starter Kit confirms that insurance is not required to enter on a tourist visa or a visa exemption, and HelloSafe says the same for UK visitors. That may change: the Ministry of Public Health is studying compulsory cover for foreign visitors because of unpaid hospital bills. Travel Tomorrow reported on 14 April 2026 that "no law has been passed, and no final timeline or system has been confirmed", and we found no decision since.

Two long stay visas do require health insurance, the LTR and the O-A retirement visa. The amounts are in is health insurance mandatory for a DTV in Thailand.

What moves the price

  1. Your age. The SafetyWing price above stops at 39.
  2. The medical limit. Thailand Starter Kit treats 100,000 USD as the floor for Thailand.
  3. Scooters and diving. Many policies exclude or condition both, and some sell them as paid options. Read does travel insurance cover motorbike accidents in Thailand before you compare prices.
  4. The length of the trip. For months and not weeks, look at nomad policies billed every month or every four weeks; we compare two in SafetyWing or Genki for a year in Thailand.

Why people buy it anyway

The UK Foreign Office tells travellers to have insurance covering local treatment and medical evacuation. The bills are in our healthcare and health insurance guide.

This is not insurance advice: a policy pays what its wording says, so read the exclusions first.
