Can I scan Thai QR codes with Wise?

By DigiTao editorial.

Thailand runs on QR codes. The noodle stall, the laundry, the scooter shop and the dive school all show you a printed square, and for years the only way to pay one was a Thai bank app, which needed a Thai bank account, which needed a visa most remote workers do not hold. The 2026 change to Wise's Thai accounts is the first real way around that.

What a Thai registered Wise account gets

The Wise Help Centre lists the changes for personal customers whose registered address is in Thailand:

  1. Transfers to any PromptPay ID.
  2. Scanning and paying PromptPay and Thai QR codes, for both individuals and businesses.
  3. A physical card delivered in Thailand and up to three digital cards.
  4. Top ups in baht from a Thai bank account.

PromptPay transactions are capped at 10,000 THB each, so it is a daily spending tool rather than a way to pay a deposit in one go.

What it takes away

Existing cards on Thai registered accounts are cancelled by September 2026, with a free replacement, and ATM withdrawals inside Thailand are no longer permitted on them. Withdrawals abroad still work. Transfers in another currency now go through baht first, which means two conversions and possibly higher fees.

When your account changes

It depends on when you opened it. Accounts opened after 21 January 2026 get the changes by August 2026; accounts opened before that date get them in October 2026. A Wise account registered to an address outside Thailand is a different product, and it is the one most travellers hold.

The limits worth knowing

MovementCap
Money sent out of Thailand800,000 THB a day
Multi currency account transfers30,000 THB a day, rising with use
Baht converted to another currency750,000 THB a day
One PromptPay transaction10,000 THB

Before you change your address

Switching your Wise address to Thailand turns your account into this product, and your ATM routine changes with it. Keep a second card issued elsewhere for cash, because a Thai bank ATM charges about 220 THB per foreign card withdrawal, according to the Chiang Rai Times.
