Can a DTV holder open a Thai bank account in 2026?

By DigiTao editorial.

The DTV was sold to remote workers as the long stay visa that finally fits, so the banking refusal lands as a surprise. The visa and the bank answer two different questions: immigration asks whether you may stay, the bank asks whether it can defend your file in a compliance review.

Why the DTV counts as a tourist visa at the bank

MBMG Group puts it plainly: despite its five year validity, the DTV is classified as a tourist category visa under the Immigration Act. Thailand Elite Visas adds the banks' reasoning: each stay is capped at 180 days, and there is no Thai sponsor behind the visa, so repeated entries read as short term visits. The visas that open an account cleanly are Non-Immigrant B, Non-O, ED, LTR and Thailand Privilege.

Why a few DTV holders still get one

Asian Nomad Hub calls the DTV part of the messy middle: some Kasikorn branches in Bangkok and Chiang Mai have opened accounts for DTV holders, others refuse, and Bangkok Bank has firmly required a long stay visa since early 2026. MBMG disagrees that this is branch discretion and describes a coordinated policy. If you try, go once, politely, with a full folder: passport, a lease in your name, the TM30 receipt, a Thai phone number, and a certificate of residence if you have one.

The frozen account problem

MBMG reports that some DTV accounts opened in 2024 were later frozen during compliance reviews. That is the real risk of paying an agent or finding a friendly branch: an account opened on paperwork that does not survive a review can be frozen with your money inside it.

What works meanwhile

Wise, which Aster of Asia reports accepts the DTV to verify its own Thai account, plus your home cards and cash drawn in large amounts, because the ATM fee is flat at about 220 THB. If the account matters more than the DTV's flexibility, a Non-Immigrant or LTR route is what actually unlocks it; the DTV guide weighs that trade.
