Thailand answers, banking and money
Can I open a Thai bank account on a tourist visa in 2026?
Thai branches used to be relaxed about this, and plenty of blog posts still describe that world. It ended with the crackdown on mule accounts, and the staff you meet today work under audit pressure.
What the banks say in 2026
Asian Nomad Hub answers the tourist question with "effectively no": tourist visas, exemption stamps and visas on arrival are refused, and the clean cases are people who arrive with a long stay non-immigrant visa already in their passport. Gateway Siam dates the Bangkok Bank change to late 2024 and lists what it now expects instead: Non-B, Non-O, ED, LTR or a retirement extension stamp.
Why the door closed
Thailand Elite Visas sets out the pressures: tighter know your customer checks to keep Thailand off international money laundering watchlists, a crackdown on accounts opened in foreign names and handed to scam networks, and managers held accountable for approving questionable files. A 30 or 60 day stay cannot show residence, and tourist accounts were historically sold on after the holder left. None of it is personal, and arguing at the counter does not move it.
The workarounds, and what each costs you
- Agents and fixers. Thailand Elite Visas reports that the side doors they used have closed, and an account opened on thin paperwork is the one a later review freezes.
- Changing visa. Holding a category the banks accept is the only route that survives a review. For anyone planning more than one season here, that is the honest answer, and our Thailand visa options guide compares them.
The DTV does not solve this, because banks treat it as a tourist category too; the DTV answer covers that case.
Living without one
Wise, your home cards and cash cover most of daily life. Cash still rules on the islands, and most major Thai bank ATMs charge about 220 THB per foreign card withdrawal, according to the Chiang Rai Times, so take out large amounts.
