When does the Portuguese citizenship clock start, from my visa date or my residence card?

Counting from the application date was one of the readings the 2026 reform closed. Under Lei Organica 1/2026, in force since 19 May 2026, the residence period for naturalisation runs from the issue date of the residence permit itself.

What that costs in real months

Advisers reported six to nine months from a D8 consulate application to a residence permit in mid 2026, and an AIMA appointment can stretch that further. Every one of those months sits before your clock starts. Someone who files at the consulate in January 2026 and collects a card in November 2026 begins counting in November 2026, which pushes a ten year target to November 2036.

Gaps break the count

Only time covered by a valid permit counts, so a card that expires while a renewal drifts is the real risk to the total. Three habits protect it.

1. Diarise the renewal window. You can file from about 30 days before expiry under Lei 23/2007 article 78(1), and the earlier you file the more of the six month protection you keep in reserve.
2. Keep every card, every paid DUC, every receipt with its QR code and every AIMA email. The file you build now is the evidence you hand over a decade later.
3. If AIMA goes silent, the receipt proving a timely renewal request is what keeps the period defensible.

Visas that never start a clock

The D8 temporary stay visa runs up to a year, can be extended once, and does not lead to a residence permit. Two perfectly legal years on it start nothing. If nationality is the goal, apply on the residence track from the beginning. Time spent in Portugal on a Schengen tourist stay counts for nothing either.

The five year marker still pays

Permanent residence at five years of legal residence was not touched by the 2026 law, and it needs A2 Portuguese. Take it when you reach it. It gives you a stable card and a documented residence history while the longer naturalisation period runs behind it.
