Is 3,000 euros a good salary in Portugal?

By DigiTao editorial.

Whether 3,000 euros is good depends on what you compare it with, and on whether the figure is before or after tax.

Against what people earn here

A gross salary of 3,000 euros is a little over three times the minimum wage and about 1.6 times INE's average total pay.

Gross or net

An employee pays 11 percent social security, 330 euros on 3,000, and income tax is withheld on top at a rate that depends on marital status and dependants. We do not print a single net figure for that reason; our Portugal income tax guide covers how income is taxed, and a Portuguese accountant can confirm your own case.

What 3,000 euros of take home pay buys

Rent plus Numbeo's estimate of spending excluding rent, read on 2 October 2026, doubled for a couple.

HouseholdMonthly totalAgainst 3,000 euros
Single, Lisbon, one bedroom in the centre2,186814 to spare
Couple on one salary, Lisbon, one bedroom outside the centre2,584416 to spare
Couple on one salary, Porto, one bedroom2,290 to 2,592408 to 710 to spare
Family of four, Porto, three bedrooms outside the centre4,044over by 1,044
Family of four, Lisbon, three bedrooms outside the centre4,512over by 1,512

So it is a comfortable salary for one or two people in either city, and one income among two for a family. The line by line version is in our Lisbon cost of living guide.

If the salary comes from abroad

A remote salary of 3,000 euros a month is below the 3,680 euros the D8 digital nomad visa asks for in 2026; see our D8 visa guide. Paid in dollars, 3,000 euros was about USD 3,368 at the European Central Bank rate of 2 October 2026, and Currency Check gives the rate of the day.
