What version of life this buys

For one person, the comfortable version of Lisbon: a flat of your own in the centre, with close to 500 euros left for a coworking desk, private health cover and weekends away. For two, Porto is the easier fit; in Lisbon a couple has to rent outside the centre and watch the extras. Our Lisbon cost of living guide and Porto cost of living guide price those extras line by line.

For a family of four the sum falls short everywhere we priced, before any school fees. The family budget for Lisbon and Porto shows what that household needs.

Can you stay legally on it?

A remote worker needs the D8 visa, which asks for 3,680 euros a month in 2026, about 1,007 euros more than USD 3,000 buys today, while the same sum as a pension or other passive income clears the D7 floor of 920 euros; our Portugal visa options guide compares the two.
