How much is a monthly public transport pass in Lisbon and Porto?

Portugal capped urban passes at two price points, and they are the same in both cities, which makes the comparison unusually simple.

Lisbon

The municipal pass covers travel inside the city of Lisbon. The metropolitano covers the whole metropolitan area, so the 10 euro difference buys you Cascais, Sintra and the south bank. Take it unless you never leave the city.

For a short stay, skip the monthly pass. Load zapping credit onto a navegante occasional card and each metro ride costs 1.72 euros, or tap a contactless bank card at the gate for 1.92. The airport has its own metro station, Aeroporto, at the end of the red line, and Metro Lisboa lists it among the ticket offices where you can load a monthly pass on arrival.

Porto

STCP lists a 25 percent discount for over 65s (22.50 and 30.00 euros) and a free Metropolitano pass in the Jovem category. A ticket bought from the bus driver costs 2.50 euros and covers only that journey, so buy a card on day one.

Andante prices by zones crossed, not by distance, and two stops can cost more than five if they straddle a boundary. On a monthly pass that stops mattering.

Is it worth it?
