How much do groceries cost per month in Lisbon?

There is no official Lisbon grocery figure, so the honest answer shows the shelf prices and the arithmetic.

At those prices one person cooking most meals lands at roughly 180 to 280 euros a month, the same range Uniplaces gives newcomers for 2026. Two people share staples and waste less, so a couple sits nearer 400 to 500, and a family of four at 700 to 900.

As a cross check: Numbeo puts a single person's spending excluding rent at 760.90 euros. Take out the 40 euro Navegante pass, 147.65 euros of utilities for an 85 square metre flat and 29.12 for internet, and about 545 euros remain for groceries, eating out, a gym and everything else. A 180 to 280 euro grocery line fits inside that with room to go out.

Where you shop changes the number

Lidl and Mercadona are the discounters. Pingo Doce and Continente are the two big national chains, with own brand lines, loyalty schemes and weekly promotions that many Portuguese shoppers plan around. Auchan and El Corte Inglés sit at the top of the range. The municipal markets are for produce: fish, fruit and vegetables are the reason to go, while packaged goods are cheaper at the supermarket.

What pushes the bill up

1. Imported food. Anything labelled international usually costs more than the Portuguese equivalent.
2. Eating out. Numbeo lists a cheap restaurant meal at 15 euros and a mid range dinner for two at 55, so two dinners out a week for a couple adds about 475 euros a month.
3. Convenience shops. Topping up at the corner shop every day costs more than one weekly discounter run.
