Portugal answers, visas

How hard is it to move to Portugal from the US?

By DigiTao editorial.

Nothing in Portuguese law treats Americans differently from other non EU nationals, and nothing has closed in 2026. What has changed is that the routes are slower and the passport is further away than older guides say.

Visiting is still easy

A US passport enters the Schengen area without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180 day period. Since 10 April 2026 the Entry/Exit System records every entry and exit with fingerprints and a facial image, so the count is exact. ETIAS, a 20 euro online travel authorisation, is due to start in the last quarter of 2026; the EU says no action is needed until it does. A visit does not turn into residence: a residence permit requires a valid residency visa, issued before you travel.

Living there: the visa you need

RouteWho it fitsMoney test in 2026
D7Retirees and people living on pensions, rent or dividends920 EUR a month, plus 50 percent for a second adult and 30 percent per child
D8Remote employees and freelancers paid from abroad3,680 EUR a month, averaged over the last three months

What makes it feel hard

  1. Documents. Every residency visa needs a criminal record certificate with a Hague apostille, travel insurance covering medical costs, proof of means and proof of the income itself. The consular post may ask for more.
  2. Timing. The consulate has 60 days in law to decide. The visa then lasts four months and two entries, inside which you attend an AIMA appointment. Jobbatical reports one to three months for that appointment, up to six in busy periods, and one to three more for the card.
  3. Tax. The United States keeps taxing its citizens wherever they live, and Portugal taxes residents on worldwide income, so you file in both countries.
  4. The long game. Citizenship now takes ten years of legal residence for Americans, counted from the day the permit is issued. Permanent residence still comes at five.

A realistic order

Choose the visa, assemble the file, apply through the Portuguese consular post for where you live in the United States, then move inside the four month window. Adding the stages above together, plan for six months to a year from application to residence card.

Start with Visa Check and the Portugal visa options guide. The short stay rules are in can I stay longer than 90 days as an American, and the filing side in do US citizens file taxes in both countries. An immigration lawyer is worth the fee if your income is irregular or your family is applying with you.
