What is the D7 visa passive income requirement for 2026?

The D7 threshold tracks the national minimum wage, which Decree-Law 139/2025 set at 920 euros gross from 1 January 2026. That is why the number changes every January and why guides written in 2024 still quote 820 or 870 euros.

The percentages are 50 percent of the main applicant's figure for an adult dependant and 30 percent for each child, applied to the 920 euro base.

Stable and regular matters more than large

A consulate is testing whether the income keeps arriving without you working for it. Pensions, rental income, dividends, royalties, interest and annuities all read cleanly. What it wants to see is a pattern: twelve months of statements showing the same money landing on roughly the same dates, with documents behind it, a pension award letter, a signed tenancy, a dividend history.

Separately, the practice reported by advisers is a Portuguese bank balance equal to about twelve months of the household requirement, roughly 11,040 euros for a single applicant. That is not a published legal minimum, it sits inside the general requirement to prove financial resources, and it is the line where files with a healthy pension and no Portuguese account stall.

What the D7 gives you afterwards

Once the residence permit is issued you may work in Portugal, as an employee or as an independent professional. That surprises people who assume the D7 forbids it. The visa is about how you qualified, not about what you are allowed to do once you live there.
