Can I stay in Portugal longer than 90 days as an American without a visa?

Visa free is not the same as unlimited. Americans, Canadians and Australians skip the visa application for short trips, then discover that the allowance they skipped it for is the same 90 days everyone else gets, shared across the whole Schengen area.

The bilateral agreement story

There is a persistent belief that a pre Schengen bilateral agreement between the United States and Portugal, or Spain, or France, lets an American add 90 days on top. It circulates in nomad forums with confident detail and no citation you can act on.

We are not going to tell you it works. Nothing in the Portuguese foreign ministry's published short stay rules recognises an extra allowance for US citizens, the officer at the border is reading the Schengen count, and since the Entry/Exit System started recording entries and exits digitally, that count is no longer a matter of how legible your stamps are. Testing the theory on your own passport is an expensive experiment.

What actually extends your stay

1. A Portuguese national visa. The D8 for remote workers at 3,680 euros a month in 2026, the D7 for passive income at 920 euros a month, the D2 for a business. All are filed at the consulate or visa centre covering your legal residence in the United States, for a consular fee of 110 euros.
2. Nothing else, in practice. The in country regularisation route, the manifestacao de interesse, was abolished on 3 June 2024.

Planning a long scouting trip

Ninety days is enough to do this properly: get a NIF, open a Portuguese bank account, view apartments in person and sign a registered twelve month lease, which is the document most consulates want and the hardest one to obtain from Ohio. Then fly home and file.
