How do I renew my Portuguese residence permit online?

The online renewal portal launched in July 2025 and it replaced the appointment scramble that defined the years before it. It is not open to everyone permanently. AIMA opens expiry months in waves, so the first thing to check is whether your month is live.

The sequence

1. Wait for your expiry month to open on portal-renovacoes.aima.gov.pt. On 30 June 2026 the portal opened for permits expiring in September and October 2026.
2. Submit inside the legal window: no earlier than 90 days before your card expires (article 63(16) of Decreto Regulamentar 84/2007) and no later than 30 days before it (article 78(1) of Lei 23/2007), once AIMA has opened your expiry month.
3. Upload a complete file. Since April 2025 AIMA does not accept partial ones, and an incomplete submission is rejected rather than held open.
4. Pay the DUC reference within ten working days. Miss it and the submission lapses.
5. Keep the receipt with the QR code. It is issued within roughly ten working days of a paid submission and it is what you show while you wait.
6. Expect three to six months from submission to card, on adviser reports rather than a published standard.

What it costs

Advisers have published figures anywhere from about 185 to about 440 euros, which used to make this a genuinely unclear question. Reading the AIMA fee table itself, in force since 1 March 2026, settles it: a temporary permit renewal carries two lines, 133.00 euros for reception and analysis and 114.30 euros for the renewal itself, so 247.30 euros at a counter. Filing through the digital channel gets a 25 percent reduction, 99.80 plus 85.80 euros, so 185.60 euros. The 307.20 euro figure some guides add is a different line in the same table, the fee for examining a request to waive the consular visa, not a renewal charge.

The number that governs your case is still the one printed on your own DUC, since the table has separate lines for card delivery in person (plus 29.90 euros) and urgent issue (plus 47.80 euros). Read it before you pay, and keep it.

Two things that quietly break a renewal

Absences. More than six consecutive months, or more than eight months in total outside Portugal during a permit period, is a problem at renewal even when everything else is in order.

Timing. Blanket automatic extensions of expired permits ended on 15 October 2025, so filing late is no longer something the system absorbs for you.
