Portugal answers, cost of living

Can you live on $2,000 a month in Portugal?

By DigiTao editorial.

At the European Central Bank reference rate of 2 October 2026, 1.1225 dollars per euro, USD 2,000 is about 1,782 euros. The rate moves, so run your own income through Currency Check before you sign anything.

One person in a one bedroom flat

Each line adds Numbeo's rent for a one bedroom flat, outside the centre then in it, to its estimate of one person's spending excluding rent. All figures were read on 2 October 2026, in euros a month.

What version of life this buys

In Braga or Coimbra, a flat of your own in the centre with a few hundred euros left each month. In Porto, a flat of your own if you rent outside the centre, in the parishes our Porto cost of living guide calls the value zones. In Lisbon, a room in a shared flat: idealista's average room was 550 euros in the first quarter of 2026, which brings the month to about 1,311 euros and leaves room to breathe.

The totals leave out three things a remote worker usually pays for: a coworking desk, private health cover, and the cash a landlord asks for on signing day. Our Lisbon cost of living guide prices each of them.

Two people on USD 2,000

It does not work on Numbeo's averages. Doubling the everyday line for a second adult gives about 2,290 euros in a one bedroom outside the centre of Porto and about 1,918 in Braga, both above 1,782.

Can you stay legally on it?

As passive income, USD 2,000 clears the 920 euros a month the D7 visa asks for in 2026, but a remote salary needs the D8, which asks for 3,680 euros, about USD 4,131 at today's rate; see our Portugal visa options guide.
