Portugal answers, cost of living

Can I live on $1,000 a month in Portugal?

By DigiTao editorial.

The conversion decides everything, so start there. The European Central Bank reference rate of 2 October 2026 was 1.1225 dollars per euro, which turns USD 1,000 into about 891 euros. Check the rate on the day in Currency Check, then build the month in euros.

The month, city by city

Each line adds idealista's average room price for the first quarter of 2026 to Numbeo's estimate of one person's monthly spending excluding rent, read on 2 October 2026.

Rooms get cheaper further inland: idealista's averages are 250 euros in Castelo Branco and Portalegre and 210 in Guarda.

What version of life this buys

A room in a shared flat, never a flat of your own. The cheapest one bedroom in these five cities, 507.80 euros outside the centre of Viseu, already brings the month to about 1,121 euros. There is no coworking desk, no private health plan and no cushion for the deposit a landlord asks on signing day.

Two cautions on the figures. Numbeo's everyday estimate is a crowd average that includes some eating out, so a careful cook spends less. And the Viseu page rests on 12 contributors, against 192 for Lisbon, so read it as an order of magnitude.

Can you stay legally on it?

For citizens of countries outside the European Union, the D7 passive income visa asks for 920 euros a month in 2026, so USD 1,000 falls about 29 euros short at today's rate; the routes are set out in our Portugal visa options guide.
