Can I use Revolut or Wise instead of a Portuguese bank?

By DigiTao editorial.

Revolut and Wise cover about 90 percent of what a newcomer needs, and then hit a wall in specific places. Knowing where that wall is saves you from opening a Portuguese account in a panic.

What they do well

Revolut issues Portuguese EUR IBAN details to customers with a Portugal address, which removes the old IBAN discrimination problem where a Lithuanian IBAN got rejected. Its fair usage exchange fee on the July 2026 tariff is 1 percent. Wise is stronger on multi currency holding and on receiving client payments in dollars or pounds, and its card gives 250 euros a month of free eurozone ATM withdrawals, then 2.69 percent on the excess.

Both are faster to open than a branch account, both work in English, and both are fine for rent transfers, groceries and paying invoices.

Where they fall short

  1. Visa applications. Consulates and AIMA expect statements that look like a bank relationship. Some accept fintech statements, some do not, and you do not want to find out at the appointment.
  2. Direct debits and utilities. Some Portuguese landlords, condominiums and utility providers only accept debito direto from a traditional bank.
  3. MB Way. The Portuguese payment layer for splitting bills, paying market stalls and confirming card payments online needs a card from one of the 28 participating Portuguese banks and a phone number registered with that bank. Revolut and Wise are not in that list.
  4. Cash and branch problems. When something goes wrong with a Financas payment or a school fee, a branch you can walk into is worth the 5 euros a month.

The setup that works

Keep Wise or Revolut as your working account for income and spending. Open one cheap Portuguese account for the local plumbing: ActivoBank Conta Simples is 0 euros a month, and the legally capped basic account (servicos minimos bancarios) is 5.37 euros a year if you qualify. That account gives you MB Way, direct debits, and a statement that nobody questions.

One tax note: fintech accounts abroad still have to be declared on your Portuguese IRS return if you are tax resident here. Being outside the Portuguese banking system does not make an account invisible.
