Can I do a visa run from Portugal to Morocco or the UK to reset my 90 days?

This is the most expensive misunderstanding in the Portugal nomad world, because people book flights on it.

Why the reset does not exist

The Portuguese foreign ministry describes a short stay as 90 days in any 180 day period. The phrase that matters is "any 180 day period". The window is not anchored to your first entry or to a calendar quarter. It slides. On any given day the question is how many of the previous 180 days you spent inside the zone. Exiting does not empty that count, it only stops adding to it.

A worked example

You arrive in Lisbon on 1 March and stay until 29 May. That is 90 days, your full allowance. You fly to Marrakech on 30 May. On 5 June you try to come back: the previous 180 days still contain 90 Schengen days, so you are refused. Your first day only ages out around 28 August. To return for a fresh full 90 you would need to stay out until late November.

What a trip outside actually does

1. Morocco, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Ireland, Cyprus, Cape Verde and the United States sit outside the Schengen count, so days spent there are free.
2. Spain, France, Italy, Croatia, Switzerland and Norway sit inside the count. A reset trip to Seville resets nothing and costs you days.
3. Split trips do work inside the rule. Sixty days in Portugal, two months in Morocco, then thirty days back in Portugal is legal because the window arithmetic allows it. That is planning, not a reset.

Since April 2026 there is no grey area at the border

The EU Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026, replacing stamps with biometric entry and exit records across all 29 countries. Officers see your exact balance. Tricks built on an unstamped passport or a quiet land crossing are finished.

The honest alternative

If Portugal is where you want to be for more than 90 days out of every 180, the answer is a national visa: the D8 for remote workers, the D7 for passive income, the D2 for entrepreneurs. All are applied for at a Portuguese consulate in your country of residence, and the manifestacao de interesse route that once let people regularise from inside Portugal was abolished on 3 June 2024, so arriving as a tourist and fixing it later is no longer a plan.
