Thailand answers, visas

Do I really need 20,000 baht to enter Thailand?

By DigiTao editorial.

The rule is real and old. The Tourism Authority of Thailand reminded travellers of it on 6 July 2026 and said it was not a new measure: proof of funds has been in Thai immigration rules since 1980 under a Ministry of Interior announcement, with the amounts updated in 2000.

The amounts, by how you enter

EntryPer personPer family
Tourist visa20,000 THB40,000 THB
Non-immigrant visa20,000 THB40,000 THB
Visa on arrival10,000 THB20,000 THB
Transit visa and certain visa exempt cases10,000 THB20,000 THB

Children under 12 are not covered by the requirement.

So is it 10,000 or 20,000 on a visa exemption

The published figures differ. The TAT notice puts "certain visa exempt cases" in the 10,000 THB line and tells visa exempt travellers to check the guidance for their nationality. The Royal Thai Embassy in London, on its page for the exemption in force since 15 September 2026, says visitors must present proof of accommodation and of onward travel within 30 days, and that officers may request additional documents at their discretion, such as proof of sufficient funds of 20,000 THB per person. The Thaiger notes that several Thai embassies publish this higher figure for the exemption. Prepare for 20,000 THB and you are covered under both readings.

Does it have to be cash, and in baht

No. TAT says a visitor may show the funds in Thai baht, an equivalent amount in another currency, or documents evidencing payment of an equivalent amount. The Thaiger, in its guide of 19 August 2026, adds that official guidance does not clearly state that showing a credit or debit card will always satisfy an officer, so cash or financial documents you can open on the spot are the safer proof.

How often it is checked

The wording is "may be asked", and The Thaiger notes that no official guidance says every arriving tourist will be asked. We found no published count of checks or refusals, so we give none. If you are asked and cannot show the funds, that becomes part of the officer's assessment, and admission is decided at the border whatever visa or exemption you hold.

What we would carry

Enough cash or foreign currency to cover the figure for your entry type, a recent bank statement saved offline, the onward ticket and the first hotel booking. It costs nothing to prepare.

The same checks appear in our arriving and staying legal in Thailand guide, and visa check shows which entry applies to your passport. Immigration rules change, so confirm with a Thai embassy before you fly.
