What is the disadvantage of a D7 visa in Portugal?

By DigiTao editorial.

The D7 is cheap to qualify for, at 920 euros a month of passive income in 2026, and that low bar hides what it asks of you afterwards. These are the costs, in the order people usually meet them.

The seven drawbacks

  1. It does not accept a salary. The official document list asks for proof of a pension, or of income from property, intellectual or financial assets. Remote employment and freelance invoices belong to the D8, whose threshold is four times as high, at 3,680 euros a month.
  2. You have to live in Portugal. Article 85 of the immigration law lets AIMA cancel a temporary permit after six consecutive months abroad, or eight months in total over the permit's validity, without a good reason. It is a residence permit, not a travel pass.
  3. You become a Portuguese tax resident. More than 183 days in a twelve month period, or a home kept as your habitual residence, puts your worldwide income under Portuguese income tax at 12.5 to 48 percent in 2026. Pensions are included, and the NHR regime that once softened this closed to newcomers from 1 January 2024.
  4. The passport now takes ten years. Since 19 May 2026 naturalisation needs ten years of legal residence for most nationalities, seven for EU and Portuguese speaking countries. Permanent residence still comes after five years on temporary permits.
  5. You qualify again at every renewal. The first permit lasts two years and renewals three. Each renewal checks means of subsistence, housing and tax and social security compliance again.
  6. The queue is long. The consulate has 60 days in law to decide, the visa is valid for four months, and Jobbatical reports one to three months for an AIMA biometrics appointment, up to six in busy periods, then one to three more for the card.
  7. Family is easier at the start than later. A family that applies together avoids the wait. A sponsor who brings relatives afterwards generally needs two years on a valid permit first, with exceptions for minor children and their other parent.

Who should not mind

A retiree who wants to live in Portugal most of the year, and whose pension would be taxed somewhere anyway, loses little. Someone who wants a European base while living elsewhere, or whose income is a remote salary, is on the wrong visa.

Before you apply

Run your own case through Visa Check, compare the routes in our Portugal visa options guide, and read D7 or D8 for a remote worker. Rules of this kind change, and a refused or cancelled permit is expensive, so have an immigration lawyer registered in Portugal check your file.
