What is the D2 visa and does it work for freelancers?

The D2 covers two different people who happen to share a form: someone setting up or buying a company in Portugal, and an independent professional who will work in Portugal under service contracts. Freelancers fall in the second group, and that is the version most nomads are actually asking about.

What the consulate weighs

There is no fixed investment figure in the law, which unsettles people who want a number to clear. The deciding document is the business plan. It has to describe what you will sell, to whom, at what price, with what costs, and why that is economically and socially relevant in Portugal. Vague plans fail. Plans with named clients, signed letters of intent and realistic first year numbers pass.

Alongside it, advisers report a savings expectation of roughly 11,040 euros per adult, twelve months of the 920 euro minimum wage, and the usual residency file: apostilled criminal record, insurance, proof of accommodation, NIF and a Portuguese bank account. For a company route, capital in the 50,000 to 100,000 euro range reads as serious, though nothing obliges you to show it.

D2 or D8, if you run your own business

The D8 is faster to prove because payslips and invoices speak for themselves. The D2 is the route when your income does not clear the D8 bar, or when the business itself is meant to live in Portugal.

Afterwards

Both produce the same AIMA permit: two years first, then three year renewals, with the same path to permanent residence at five years. The D2 simply asks you to actually run the business you described, and renewal looks at whether you did.
