The Lisbon to Porto train in 2026: Alfa Pendular, Intercidades, fares and stations

The Lisbon to Porto train runs on two services, Alfa Pendular and Intercidades, and in 2026 it costs from 28.05 euros in Intercidades second class to 49.90 euros in Alfa Pendular Comfort, with a journey of about 2 hours 50 minutes on the fast train and noticeably longer, with more stops, on the slower one. Both run several times a day to Porto Campanha, both give you free wifi, and only one of them puts a power socket at every single seat. How much does the Lisbon to Porto train cost in 2026?

A single Lisbon to Porto ticket costs from 28.05 euros in Intercidades second class to 49.90 euros in Alfa Pendular Comfort, on the standard fare table CP put into effect on 1 January 2026 and was still charging when we checked in September.

Alfa Pendular also sells a return ticket, 64.50 euros in Tourist class and 90.00 euros in Comfort, both cheaper than two singles booked separately. On top of the standard fares, CP's Promo tickets cut the price by up to 65 percent on Alfa Pendular and Intercidades when you book ahead, with the discounted price rounded up to the nearest 50 cents. CP pushed that further in a campaign that ran from 22 April to 6 May 2026: 5,000 Comfort and Tourist class seats for travel between 1 and 15 May, sold from 7.50 euros for Lisbon to Porto, a cut of up to 80 percent, provided you booked at least 10 days ahead. Nothing on that scale was running when we checked in September, so treat 7.50 euros as a sign of how low the fare can go, not a price you can count on today.

Alfa Pendular or Intercidades: which one should you take?

Alfa Pendular is the faster, more comfortable and pricier of the two, and it is the one that guarantees you a socket. It has run since 1999, tops out at 220 kilometres an hour, and carries 301 passengers across two classes, Comfort and Tourist, that CP itself describes as sharing identical amenities: a power socket at every seat, free wifi, audio and video channels, and a cafeteria and bar in carriage number 3. Intercidades has run since 1988 and carries first and second class carriages with free wifi and space for bicycles, plus its own bar service, but CP's own page on the train places power sockets only in some areas of first class, not at every seat and not in second class at all. If your day depends on a laptop staying charged, that single detail decides which train to book, more than the extra time on board or the extra 8 to 14 euros.

Which stations do you leave from and arrive at?

Lisbon Santa Apolonia and Lisbon Oriente both serve Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains to Porto, and CP's own fare tables list the two together as interchangeable starting points for this route, so check which one your ticket names before you leave home or the office. Every Alfa Pendular and Intercidades train from Lisbon ends at Porto Campanha, on the eastern edge of the city, not at the older, central Sao Bento station. To reach Sao Bento, change onto one of CP's urban trains: on the timetable CP put into effect on 26 July 2026, these run every 5 to 15 minutes and take about 4 to 5 minutes between the two stations. Can you actually get work done on the train?

Yes, and Alfa Pendular is the easier train to work on. Free wifi and a power socket at every seat, in either class, mean a laptop can run through a battery cycle and still have somewhere to plug in, and the bar carriage sells coffee if you need to step away from your seat for a call. Intercidades also gives you free wifi, but only some seats in first class have a socket, so book first class if you plan to work the whole way, and arrive with a full charge as a backup rather than counting on finding a plug in second class. On either train, treat the wifi as a backup connection for anything that cannot drop: CP does not publish a guaranteed speed, and the line runs through tunnels and rural stretches where a mobile hotspot can do better.

Is Lisbon to Porto a workable day trip by train?

It is possible but tight. Two Alfa Pendular journeys at about 2 hours 50 minutes each put you on a train for roughly 5 hours 40 minutes of your day, before the walk to Santa Apolonia or Oriente and back from Campanha. Trains run from early morning into the evening, so both legs fit inside one day, but a day trip only makes sense if the reason for going is worth giving up most of an afternoon to travel. For a work trip built around a fixed meeting, check the specific departure and return times for your date on cp.pt rather than assuming the first and last trains match what ran the month before.

Is the bus cheaper than the train?

Sometimes, and it depends on how far ahead you book. FlixBus's own route page lists fares from USD 7.98, about EUR 7.00 at the mid market rate XE published on 26 September 2026, for the roughly 2 hour 30 minute run between Lisbon and Porto, with about 75 buses a day. Rede Expressos, Portugal's other national coach network, also runs the corridor several times a day; its fares move with demand and booking date, so check rede-expressos.pt directly for your travel date rather than relying on a figure printed weeks in advance. The honest comparison is not train against bus in general but Intercidades second class against an early bus booking: both can land under 30 euros, and the bus can occasionally undercut it further, but the train gives you a fixed seat, a table and, on Alfa Pendular, a socket you do not have to fight another passenger for.
